Phil, I'm glad yours look great, but based on various threads I've followed, I'd guess either (a) the percentage of 70s would be MUCH lower, or (b) the inferior coins are pretty bad: nicks on Miss Liberty, etc. Problems like that will doom the submitter to below 69s and a waste of time and money. Although I and others have been labelled "stupid" for cancelling with the mint, I am thrilled that MCM and ST made great offers on 70 sets EARLY in the game, and I am certainly going to check with them often before buying directly from the mint in the future.
I doubt it if my sets were any indication. You only ordered 1 set and may have gotten a lucky draw. I had an order of 20, and 2 RPs "may" have gotten a 70, 5 proofs probably would have. I had 15 sets of 2011 25th anniversary to compare to, and these were worse by far. Some of the ones with small nicks may have been post minting, but there was a bunch of coins with the same field breaks or scratches in exactly the same spots, so I think there may have been entire runs with bad coins. At worse, the 2011 RPs had a single spot on the field (which dooms it to a 69).
I got mine today. It's a really nice set but I see a couple things coming up on the horizon. One is this set may not reach the $270 I thought it would and the other thing is since many collectors were able to buy this set it may affect the prices of the other reverse proofs. In other words, if I had any other reverse proofs I would keep a close eye on the prices. Here's a pic, nothing special but it'll do just to show.

Yep ! I had the same problem, except one of the coins fell completly out of the holder ( heart stopped ). I tried putting it back without touching the face, but not sure. I was thinking maybe sending the package back to the mint for replacement, but not sure if they have any left.
Well I just got my PCGS 70 set from ST, and the RP is all milk spotted to heck. Furthermore, there are way too many scratched in the slabs to boot. So now I go through the hassle of extra shipping, figuring out who will do what to make it right, etc. Any tips?
My advice, which you probably won't want to hear, is return it and get your money back. Then go to a coin show and pick yourself out a nice unspotted set in the OGP and store it properly and you should have no spotting problems. I've heard of too many instances of slabbed proof ASE's developing milk spots that I just don't see the worth of putting up with the stress of collecting 70's. Not my cup of tea. Just one persons opinion.
What I can't understand is that I have 2 reverse-proof-like Britannias I bought for cheap, which have been cared for in unknown ways (in and out of flips, etc.) for 13 years, and they have no frost/shiny tics like the SF RP. I have Ike's which have less milk spotting. I have 10 proof sets from the '80s bought this year for $5 each--same unknown history--which have fewer scratches in the plastic cases than these slabs. What is going on? I feel like the mint's slipping has trickled down to TPG...
What he said.... Amazing that this coin was just slabbed and already has milk spots. Hope mine isn't the same. There's something about the PCGS slabs that make the coins more prone to milk spotting, perhaps when they clean the coins to grade or maybe a chemical or residue in the slabs themselves.
wow. I hope the 2 sets of 70s I bought from silvertowne aren't like that. they are in the mail on there way.
My 3 sets at set to ship in OCT. and if I sent it to PCGS and don't get a PF70 grade, can I send it back to the mint to get another set that is better condition? Is this possible? Or should I just get sets from Silvertowne and be done with it?
Just got set #2: PCGS flag 70. This one's a lot better than the Merc set--no milk spots immediately noticeable, anyhow--but still a few shiny tics on the RP's field...which I guess still qualifies as a 70 nowadays. Amazing. ETA: just for reference, I own and have seen a few other SP-69 5 oz ATB pucks with absolutely zero flaws noticeable to the naked eye. I'd have to spend some time with magnification to see why they got 69s instead of 70s. Too bad the standard isn't held that high for ASE RPs.
That's pretty sad actually. Because with the 2011 set, those tics disqualified the coins as 70s, pcgs or ngc. I guess with the lower quality this year, the tpgs still feel pressured to release a "fair" number of 70s, which is wrong. If the coins have visible blemishes, they should not be graded as 70s.
Indeed. I sold a raw 2011 set I would have called a 69, due to one or two tiny shiny pin pricks, but compared to these two 70 sets from PCGS, it could have been a 70 CAC with a Star and a Plus.
