The Marshall Mint began minting operations in, Virginia City, Nevada, in 1991. I went to a store last year in Virginia City and it had Silver 1oz rounds and also they were not cheap. Anyone have a silver round from this private mint? http://www.marshallmint.com/?page=about
Been to Virginia City several times in past 15 years and never knew they existed. Haven't been since I became interested in silver. Next time I'll have to look for them.
Bought one oz of silver from there when silver was very cheap...12 dollars maybe? I remember I paid 30 for it though because I was young and really wanted something to bring home. Overpriced in my experience but they valued a piece of silver ore I found near an old mine at about 90 bucks!:hail:
OK, went to Virginia City. I purchased the most expensive 1oz .999 Silver Round in my life to date It is a very nice looking Silver Round. This Silver Round is minted by the Marshall Mint, a local refiner. The item is a souvenir, but the silver in it is from the old workings of Comstock Lode, and that is very neat! I was told Mr. Marshall the owner owns all the underground minerals rights of the VC area. $74.24 w/Nevada tax http://marshallmint.com/?page=store&click=|0|41&shopper= Comstock Historical Commemorative "The Big Bonanza Strike" 1 March 1872 1oz .999 Fine Silver Medallion (1 Troy Ounce Round) 1 1/2 " diameter Double Strike, Proof-Like Serial Numbered on Certificate, but not on Silver Round. They are up to 550+ sold of the 5,000 stated limited minting. Marshall Mint, 96 North C Sreet, Virginia City, Nevada The 300 Ton Press (1oz silver rounds) is in the back of the store. You can see it thru a glass window. A second press makes smaller silver rounds. Overall, I am glad I got it as a souvenir. I do not expect it to be an investment. I have no connections to the Nevada area, but I like reading of the Virginia City history.
Odd, I thought this public company owned the rights to the Comstock mines and tailings. Oh well.. http://www.comstockmining.com/news/press-releases
Great link! Thanks for sharing. I think I drove by them on my trip. Is this Virginia City, Nevada proper? I am no expert here...I am just a tourist
If you don't already have the book " Crime of 1873~ The Comstock connection~ A tale of miners, trade, and the Morgan Dollar" by Robert Van Ryzin ( Krause) http://www.amazon.com/Crime-1873-The-Comstock-Connection/dp/0873418735 The history and photographs will make you want to go back again and look at all of the area. One of my favorites in my coin library.
