Kinda like my family... For my birthday, father's day, Christmas, etc... they would buy me things, expensive things, from places like the 'Historical Society'. At first I smiled and said nice things, hoping that it was a one time affair. However, they kept doing it. Giving me way overpriced whizzed coins in fancy holders. I finally had to put a stop to it. At least that stuff was real silver, but as coins, they were PMD all the way.
It hurts to see people you love be scammed in order to do something nice for you. You can be hard when it is someone you don't know, and say they should know better, but they really don't. That is what misleading sellers/manufacturers are hoping for.
My wife gets all kinds of spam in her email offering coins from unreliable sources, and the Bradford Exchange has a line of slabbed coins as well. She's always asking me about them first, as she wants to get me gifts of numismatic items. She's allowed to only make purchases from the U.S. Mint's website for me, and no where else, just because she knows nothing about collectible coins
Yeah, its hard. My ex wife tried to buy me a book once, it was great she tried, but.... Its hard, you love them for wishing to try, but know deep down if they aren't a collector and know what you collect will always fail. Reminds me of trying to buy clothes for my wife, I bet she feels the same way, (nice he tried, but look at this crap).
