I received and email from APMEX tonight about this 25,000 limited edition silver maple leaf coin with the Titanic Privy mark on it for the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. http://www.apmex.com/product/68122/.aspx?utm_source=ActOn&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=040412Bban1 Who's in? Think it will be a good one? How come I can't get that Celine Dion song out of my head now?
When I first read my email, I instantly thought of the NZ colored Titanic coin with only 2,200 mintage. These exclusive deals appear to border on being a Franklin Mint issue. I do hold a couple privies but now have second thoughts about them. I'm passing on the Maple Leaf Privy. But they do have a history of other privies and that alone could increase the future value for this issue.
I thought that it was a little bit of a surprise that a government would more or less do a run of special coins for a business. With that siad I've been thinking about getting a couple.
I'm uninterested. The privy idea seems to be a marketing deal designed to make an otherwise poorly produced and bland coin seem interesting. If you like a high probability of owning a coin with milk spots, it's worth a flyer, I guess. In addition, I know a lot of people like Titanic-related memorabilia, but, for me, owning something which remembers an event in which over 1,000 came to a horrible end would seem to generate some pretty unhealthy "chi", as the Chinese would say. I'm thinking the reality of that event was probably quite a bit different than the myths and legends of the past 100 years would lead us to believe.
I agree with the idea that it is just a marketing thing. They are way over done. As for things that commemorate events where people died horribly by the thousands, that would rule out a number of the current and upcoming AB designs. Will you pass on the battlefield pucks or are you referring more to civilian disasters?
1998 RCM issued 26000 titanic privy coins to one vendor as well. That coin is now listed at provident for $75 and $85 at APMEX. With just 25000 issued now I would suspect that it will be a good long term investment.
Seems to me that this would just be a "fun" thing to have in a collection just to have something different to look at. But I agree that the shipping is a bit high for just one or a few coins. Also the premium is a bit high as an investment but I do like the way it looks.
Canadian Silver Coins To Own Hi, everyone!) I've just found the article about Canadian Silver Coins To Own...It will be interesting you
Seems APMEX now has an eBay store presence, and from looking over the weekend their shipping was $4.95 for a lot of the items. Not sure if they have these listed there yet, but might be worth a look over there and comparing.
