Could the US Mint be following the RCM? http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/baby-gift-set-2012-prod1230013?pCatId=cat200020
http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProdschedView?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001# Mint schedule thru 5-15-12 and No Silver Mint Sets? IMO, If the mint runs this set for only 6 months and produces only on demand, I'm buying 11 sets on the first day! But who knows what they're doing?
Yeah. Heard about that TC. Mint's gonna scrap coin silver because the special blanks needed cost too much jing. What a load o' malarkey. I'm gonna miss 'coin silver' if they do this. The tradition of pre-65 coinage should be carried on and switching over to .999 fine makes these sets more commemorative in nature, rather than traditional. Just a humble opinion........
"Of course, prices will reflect the increased silver content of the coins.” Ya think, Mike White? Just another way to charge me more money. Blasted Goobers......
I just don't know what to think about all this. :rolling: The reason I LOVE the Silver Proof Set is because it's our connection to REAL money. Making these coins of an alloy that never circulated seems sacrilegious...however, it certainly explains the delay (I couldn't understand why the 2012 sets didn't come out at the end of January). If all this planchet nonsense is true, the 2010 and 2011 Silver Proof sets will truly be key collectibles. Silver Proof set sales as of 28 February, 2012... 2010 Silver Proof Set sales: 0 for a total of 585,414* 2011 Silver Proof Set sales: 1,174 for a total of 552,426 * Sold Out The lowest mintage of any modern Silver Proof set is 2010 (585,414). Since we have no idea when the 2011 sales will end (or when/if 2012 sales will begin) the best we can do is estimate how long it will take for 2011 sales to match 2010 sales. Given this week's sales of 1,174 sets, it will take twenty-eight (28) weeks to catch up...and brings us back to... 2011 Silver Proof Set: (585,414 – 552,426 ) / 1,174 = 28
Help me understand! Is this not modern? 1995 549,878 per http://proofsetguide.com/proof-set-mintage/ ETA: oh please pardon my lack of due diligence...those didn't include all the great quarters :yesroceed...
So, with the last mint sales report, we learned that 1,174 sets were sold of the 2011 Silver Proof set for the week. Since the end of January, the sales have been averaging 1,022 sets per week. Right now the 2011 Silver Proof Set is 33,814 sets behind the 2010 total. If the current average of 1,022 sets sold per week maintains, it will take just over 33 weeks for the 2011 to catch up with the 2010 total. This mirrors Yakpoo's earlier calculation of Labor Day in September. And again, still no word of when the 2012 set will be made available or when the 2011 set will end. It would be interesting to know what the mints plan is, if there actually is one. So lets see, umm, we've had the 5.oz ATB's, next was the 25th Silver Eagle Anniversary Set. So maybe now the mint is again looking for "The Next Big Thing". So whatta ya think? All 2012 Silver Proof Sets made of .999 silver, because the decision was made to eliminate 90% coinage and are no longer being made? The sets are already late being made available to the public, probably takes awhile to round up all those planchets and time to get things set up. That may take alot of time. Which provides more time to unload the remaining 2011's. So were talkin' low mintage. Limited edition. Maybe household sales limits? First year of issue. Extraordinary, elaborate packaging complete with numbered COA. And all the fanfare and hype that comes with it. Could be. Who Knows? Of course, this is all just conjecture on my part, but stranger things have happened. I just wonder though if this "Next Big Thing" is what the mint has planned for us the customer.
"Big things" regarding the mint are few and far between 2Schnauzers. Every once in a while you score a coup. I'm horrible with my timing but I did do rather well with my allotment of 25th anniversary eagles........
I hope I didn't chose the wrong words when I said "The Next Big Thing". Maybe the term sounded a little derogatory but wasn't meant to be. My reference should have been maybe "The next highly featured mint product". Not saying the ATB's or Anniversary Sets were or are lacking though. Still have plenty of room in my safe for that Anniversary Set for sure and a couple of singles of the reverse proof should they come my way. My timing is awful too plus I'm a coward when it comes to purchasing new product. Did score on the 2009 UHR three years back, but other than that, just concentrated on silver bullion and the completion of some older sets.
