Sure there are many ways to hide it in obscure locations but if something happens to you and your loved ones' forget chances are no one would find it till the house is sold or in a garbage dump some where.
I bet it does too. I bet what happens even more though is relatives not knowing what the value of the items are and getting hosed when they sell. I worry about this a lot with my books, so much so I want to put together a spreadsheet with estimated worth for my wife so she knows which ones to really worry about, versus cheaper ones.
I went thru the same thing, in a major metro-area, in the 1980's. It's just reality. And yes, there is no "central inventory". Even if there were, don't you think all of the people clamoring for SD boxes at all the branches, would go into the same "central inventory"? One tip: get to know the branches where you most want a new SD box. Talk to the manager, or the vault attendant if it's a big enough branch to have one. You might get lucky--they don't "have to" follow the "waiting list" if you call or show up on the right day. As far as putting a giant safe in your house: Sure. But I wouldn't keep all your valuables there. Do you think thieves would have less problem breaking into a bank vault than whatever safe the average person could afford? You sometimes hear fantasies by some of the PM people about the "government" confiscating all of the bank SD boxes; I heard all of that stuff back in the 1970's. But there's no easy answer, except maybe to "diversify" your storage, & that can get difficult too......
I can say with 100% assurance that this does happen, and is a HUGE problem. I am still finding 'things' (items that match the topic of this thread) that were 'hidden in obscure locations', many of which I have no clue about value etc.. That said, CoinTalk has been a great find for me, as I have gleaned much information that is useable for me. I still have my eyes peeled for one "COIN" that worried my husband at the very last.. he was sure it had not been accounted for. I know what I am looking for, however, it could be hidden absolutely anywhere. (I suppose he might have been a bit eccentric about that..) It may be found someday many years down the road, when CoinTalk is "the olden days". Or perhaps never. The dealers who were involved at last each have no record of receiving that particular one. If I die before I figure it all out, it will all go to the grave, cuz no one else has a clue! And of course, this is my rant since I joined CoinTalk. Make your heirs a treasure map or something, with SOME helpful instruction, and a name or two for help!!! Lucy
Two adult siblings inherited their father's very valuable painting which he hid in plain sight, right on the wall. Upon taking it to auction, it was discovered to be fake. The art registry still had him as the recorded owner yet he never told anyone that it was stolen or that he on his own discovered it's true worth. But for years he and all who knew its value, admired it's beauty everyday of their lives. The men were perplexed and obsessed with the delima. The two decided to alternate living in his house before they had to sell it. They lived without any distractions, and completely cut off from the outside world devoting each minute awake looking, thinking and feeling dad's daily routines. There had to be an answer, but what was it? Obsession paid off with a bump, unveiling a sliding fake back on the now empty bookcase. They concluded the father secretly took the painting to Paris on a business trip and had it copied without telling anyone. I successfully "hid and forgot" when I sold my first house and have ironicly never forgotten it since. If I would ever hide a small object again I recognize it would be from myself. As we age, we forget more often, making it all the worse. I now see there is a "SenseCam" you wear that acts like a Black Box flight recorder to record and playback your daily activities to exercise your memory. Could be a good investment opportunity. I wish LucyRay success.
