Gold in Fort Knox...the eternal unanswered question for conspiracy theorists. Let move on to more important matters like aliens or doomsday. Maybe the aliens took the gold in advance of them bringing on doomsday. Discuss.... Guy
No. You don't win arguments by extracting a couple of words out of context then responding to it as if the context didn't exist. I also didn't say that gold matched money in circulation. I stopped at the 1913 comment as that was simply irrelevant and incorrect as well, and it isn't worth my time to continue with the folderol. I've made my point about why gold in Ft. Knox is necessary, legally required, and what damage it would cause to the economy if it were found not to be there. If it is your opinion that it isn't important than so be it, but don't expect that I would consider this to be any evidence to the contrary. The United States government, via it's actions thinks otherwise or they wouldn't have 1000s of troops there to protect Ft. Knox. Obviously there is a great importance to it and it's folly to think they are maintaining this depository simply for the fun of it.
In 1981, when Ronald Reagan was considering a move back to the Gold Standard, he asked the Treasury Secretary (Donald Regan) to chair a Congressional Commission to investigate the feasibility. Here is their Report...Volume 1, anyway. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I thought this was an interesting tidbit...
I don't think you can provide any evidence that this is so. Most people never think about gold in Ft Knox backing the dollars in their wallet or their credit cards. It wouldn't surprise me if a large number of people don't even know what Ft Knox is. The average person just doesn't think about money in the way you imagine.
Well it's an opinion and you are entitled to it. IMO, movies such as Goldfinger did a great deal to cement the mystique of Ft. Knox in many people's minds. Just this week, the History Channel's "Brad Meltzer's Decoded" did an entire program devoted to all these rumors and history about Ft. Knox, the gold, and so forth. It was on at 8pm on Wednesday night (prime time). This was actually a repeat from Oct. 5th. So I think a log more people know about Ft. Knox than you suggest. People "assume" it's there for a reason related to the money or the government would not put so much effort into keeping it safe and secret.
Yes Indeed. A perfectly plausible theory concerning that gold is that it was used throughout the late 80s & 90s to keep the POG suppressed and to prop up the $ with other central banks. It was all done through the vast paper gold industry created during this period and bad banker bets consumed it. There may be none left now. The gubment could easily disprove this but they choose not to do so.
That's pretty lame... a movie that few people under the age of 50 have probably seen, and a cult cable show with perhaps 200K viewers on a good day. This doesn't rise to the level of support for your economic theories.
