Not to mention the 1995 set only comes with 5 coins versus the 2010 and 2011 which come with 14 coins and more Silver and more dollar value of the actual coins as currency. Refer to the OP regarding breakeven of Silver weight for 2010 and 2011 sets - and the 1995 sets only have a Silver Dime and Silver Half Dollar (not the 5 Silver quarters and four $1 coins [non-Silver] in the set).
Sales are back up again (slightly) this week and the 2011 Silver Proof set made it over 500,000...WooHoo!! :hail: Also, this is the first week where the weekly sales of 2010 sets has to be greater than the 2011 sets to equal the 1995 sales figures. I think there will be a last minute burst in 2010 sales, but just enough to reach a final sales figure of 585,000. WOW! Just imagine...585,000! If the 2011 sets go off sale at the end of January as expected, the Mint will have to sell about 10,000 each week to match the 2010 sales figure. This is truly an AMAZING year!! Silver Proof set sales as of 22 November, 2011...(thinking of JFK hya 2010 Silver Proof Set sales: 674 for a total of 577,428 2011 Silver Proof Set sales: 6,687 for a total of 500,395 The lowest mintage of any modern Silver Proof set was 1995 (679,984). The average weekly sales figures for 2010 sets needed by the end of the year (5 weeks left) to equal that mintage is... 2010 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 577,428) / 5 = 20,511 The average weekly sales figures for 2011 sets needed by the end of January 2011 (9 weeks left) to equal that mintage are... 2011 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 500,395) / 9 = 19,954
Thanks yakpoo for another update. The numbers are lookin' good. Also, thank you for mentioning President Kennedy. I've been thinking about him most of the day.
Was on Ebay tonight and typed in 2011 s Silver Proof Set. Found 1 seller that's asking $120.00 for the set. Wow.
That's someone trying to clearly rip people off. Although it might end up being worth that much, anyone dumb enough to pay that now while you can still buy from the Mint directly for half the price deserves to throw their money away.
NGC shows... Kennedy Half... 2010 Silver PFUC69 = 1461 2010 Silver PFUC70 = 2101 2011 Silver PFUC69 = 1253 2011 Silver PFUC70 = 2406 ...nothing else graded. Roosevelt Dime... 2010 Silver PFUC69 = 1033 2010 Silver PFUC70 = 2233 2011 Silver PFUC69 = 573 2011 Silver PFUC70 = 1816 ...nothing else graded. I suspect that nearly all the coins minted will fall into these two (2) grades. We'll have to wait 100 years or so to see how the casual collector handles these coins. I think they'll be a pretty nice investment for someone not yet born.
wow. That seems like a lot! I found one ad on eBay that mentioned a population of 140 for PCGS 2010 PR-70 Kennedy. I know that PCGS numbers are almost always smaller, but I wonder if its because they grade harder or that fewer people send their coins to them? I'd be interested to see what the percentages of 70-graded coins from coins submitted are from each (PCGS and NGC). Anyway - thanks! Does anyone have the PCGS population numbers?
Sales are moving up slightly for the 2011 Silver Proof set, but the 2010 sets remain steady... Silver Proof set sales as of 29 November, 2011... 2010 Silver Proof Set sales: 625 for a total of 578,053 2011 Silver Proof Set sales: 7,306 for a total of 507,701 The lowest mintage of any modern Silver Proof set was 1995 (679,984). The average weekly sales figures for 2010 sets needed by the end of the year (4 weeks left) to equal that mintage is... 2010 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 577,428) / 4 = 25,483 The average weekly sales figures for 2011 sets needed by the end of January 2011 (8 weeks left) to equal that mintage are... 2011 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 507,701) / 8 = 21,535
My "opinion" (and that's all it is) is that this year is unique because we have two (2) different year sets (2010 and 2011) on sale at the same time, diluting sales of each. This, a slow economy, high silver prices, and a large number of competing US Mint products has kept sales figures of US Silver Proof sets at historic lows (modern era, anyway). The "sour grapes" contingent will say this is the "new normal" and sales of Silver Proof sets will be even lower next year...don't believe it!! Once 2012 Silver Proof sales exceeds 2010 or 2011 sales, prices for 2010/2011 sets should begin to rise. One other point to consider is "distribution". If current sales figures are bolstered by large Dealer purchases, that may have a depressing effect on prices in the short term. One of the reasons the 1999 Silver Proof sets did so well was the "One per Household" limit the Mint placed on those sets early on. The Mint eventually lifted the limit, but it still contributed to the wide distribution (lack of ready availability) of those sets.
Putting "projected mintage" aside for a moment...you bought 1.33866 Oz of pure silver (plus $5.06 of other coins) for $55. That means you paid $49.94 for 1.33866 Oz of pure silver...or $37.30/Oz. Silver is currently $32.75/Oz so you could have done a bit better buying a silver bar, but you would have missed out on future numismatic gains. I think you made a wise choice. When I started this thread, the price of silver was $12/Oz higher than it is today. The current Administration is actively driving speculators out of the commodity markets in order to keep prices down. Not surprising...any Administration would do that in an election year. Bullion hoarders would be nuts to buy these sets at the current Mint prices. On the other hand, the savvy collector can pay a premium (12% in your case) to a Dealer and have a nice silver investment with significant (imho) upside numismatic (and bullion) potential. Well done! :thumb:
WOW!! The excitement is mounting...you can almost cut the tension with a knife!! Three (3) weeks to go and the 2010 Silver Proof set sales have barely budged...but the 2011 Silver Proof sets are surging! The question is..."Will they surge enough to over take the 2010 sales figures?" I'm guessing "No"...of course, this assumes the 2011 Silver Proof sets go off-sale at the end of January 2012 (as expected). Silver Proof set sales as of 06 December, 2011... 2010 Silver Proof Set sales: 791 for a total of 578,844 2011 Silver Proof Set sales: 9.608 for a total of 517,309 The lowest mintage of any modern Silver Proof set was 1995 (679,984). The average weekly sales figures for 2010 sets needed by the end of the year (3 weeks left) to equal that mintage is... 2010 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 578,844) / 3 = 33,713 The average weekly sales figures for 2011 sets needed by the end of January 2011 (7 weeks left) to equal that mintage are... 2011 Silver Proof Set: (679,984 – 517,309) / 7 = 23,239 Who can resist the First year America the Beautiful™ Quarters...with the full-face Lincoln dollar? ...or the Second year America the Beautiful™ Quarters...with the US Grant Dollar...and the new packaging? :thumb:
2010 is in the bag as lowest mintage since 1995. 2011 is a mystery. The Mint's given no indication they'll be halting sales early. It looks like the 2010 Uncirculated Set (the last satin set) will fall short of previous years as well.
Just picked up these http://www.ebay.com/itm/38038422218...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_3209wt_1163
WOW...nice! ...but I hate it when they display nice coins all jumbled up like that. I've read where some Dealers buy thousands of these set for grading. I forget if it's NGC or PCGS, but at least one of those companies has a grading option where bulk lots can submitted with a minimum acceptable grade of...say...PF69. If at least 60% of the coins grade to that grade or higher, the rest of the coins are returned (ungraded) at no charge. I "suspect" the rolls for sale on eBay are the ungraded coins, but that's just a guess. I wonder how many of these sets will still be intact 20 years from now.
The Mint updated it's product schedule. The early 2012 releases are now listed: 2012 Clad Quarters Proof Set Jan 10 2012 Silver Quarters Proof Set Jan 17 2012 Presidential Dollars Proof Set Feb 23 So the quarters proofs are coming out earlier this year. But, no mention of the full 2012 Silver Proof Set yet. I'm assuming they will sell the 2011 sets until at least the 2012s are released or a sell out.
