No, I wouldn't collect the bullions, but with 36M sold the Eagle base is huge, much larger than Pandas, thus 100k is a low number. Now, one could argue the Eagle's popularity is due to the superior quality of the art, which may be a factor. But, I also believe there's more faith in an American bullion than China's, a communist nation.

I bet 95% of those 36m were sold to speculators not collectors and that more than half are unopened in monster boxes still. Name one sports card, comic book or any collectible that a higher population going in the millions is a plus factor. In the long term supply will far exceed demand.

So, now we're going to mix apples & oranges and inflate mintages? We're talking 100k for this set, not millions. Even your WAG says there are 1.8M collectors.

My mom, dad, kids all have a few ASE, not one is a collector. I have an Albert Pujols rookie card with a population of 1500 and population of under 50 in the grade it's in. You know how much it's worth..? Less than the premium on the 25th anv set. I can buy sports card in just about every store in my town, not one store has ASE's. I learned about hype and collecting when I was still in middle school. If you're flipping the ASE set on the hype to make some cash more power to you. If you're keeping one to fill your set more power to you, if you think the set is going to go up in price you have a lesson to be learned.

To answer your question, the 2009 Ultra High Relief never did sell out. It was available until the end of the year when the Mint finally suspended sales. The Mint actually melted around 85,000 of the already struck, but unsold examples after sales were suspended.

The 2009 Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set was limited to 50,000 and it sold out in 3 or 4 days.

The ATB pucks were much more like the UHR than these silver eagle sets. Both the UHR and the ATB pucks were new issues never before offered by the Mint. Both were highly demanded at first, but after awhile collectors seemed to lose interest in the ATB pucks. Same story with the UHR, highly demanded at first, then it sort of died down and only in the last year or so has the interest in the UHR really come back and caused a huge spike in prices.\

The 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Sets are different. Here, the Mint is issuing coins which to a collector base which has been growing for 25 years. It is not the introduction of a new series, but instead an anniversary set of one of the most collected series in all of numismatics. That is why they were able to sell 100,000 sets so quickly and that is why they'll never trade for melt like many of the ATB pucks.

I can guarantee if silver hits $100 an ounce not only will they sell for melt but will also be melted.

They were able to sell 100k so quick because of profiteers, not collectors, this site makes that very clear.

Guano, I must confess. I'm a PROFITEER in this case so I can collect more, The US MINT gave all proftiteers & collectors a change to make money if they got through.
It was a no brainer I got thru at 4:30 and would of been labeled a DUMMY instead of profiteer if I didn't take the limit of five.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Silver hits $100 an ounce then this set will sell for $3K raw. Also if you really think there are not 100,000 people who collect ASE's out there then who do you think the flippers are flipping to?

IMHO if you didn't get one or didn't get a chance to make a profit off of it then that is yor own fault, certainly there were collectors who missed out, why? Cause if you snooze you looze! I saw plently of posts with people saying "oh it will take a few weeks to sell out i'll just wait". TOo bad soo sad got no pity for ya anymore.

I assume we have over 30,000 serious ASE collectors or the 10th Annv Proof wouldn't be over $2,000. I've been in deep tought since Wed. thinking about becoming one of the serious ASE collector. I keep browsing the "For Sale" section LostDutchman has a 10th ASE for sale trade.

While I wouldn't push you one way or the other, I can tell you that I have a 10th anniversary set in OGP and have never regretted the $5k+ investment for a moment. It's a stunning set in hand! Once you have that one and the 2006/2010 sets, completing the collection is fairly easy and can be done a little bit at a time without straining the wallet too much. When they're all together and laid out as a family, it really is a sight to behold.

more than 800,000 proof SAE's sold in 2011- there are clearly more than 100,000 SEA collectors.

This statement is 100% False. The American Silver eagle is "the most popular bullion coin in the world." *, and **

*** I could find even more reputable claims of this international sales of ASE's have always been strong.

Oh boy. You really think that if the price of silver triples, the price of a five coin set with the the two tied-for-2nd lowest mintage coins in one of the most widely collected series ever would fall by approximately 28%?

Here's a challenge for you since you're so confident: silver HAS tripled since the 250K mintage 2006 Anniversary set came out. Three coins in it. Please point us all to where we can find those sets being melted OR buy them for $100.

Guano, did you or did you not make a good profit on the 25th eagle sets ? a lot of profit has already been made.

all you had to do was call the US mint and you would have basically received free coins and a check. thats how easy it was.

sorry if you missed out guano, maybe next time !

I got 3. sold 1,now i have 2 at a very low cost to me.

    cost for 3 was $900
    sold 1 for -$860

I now have 2 sets that cost me $20 bucks each. (not counting fees,etc..)

ordering these from the mint was like getting free coins and a check.

guano,if you are not a collector and just a bullion investor then thats all the more reason you should have made money on the 25th eagle sets.

as an investor ,to make a profit it's not always about what you like but what your customers want. huge money was made by people who got multiple sets of five. people are still making money even though the price has fallen a bit.

guano ? please answer ! did you or did you not make money on the 25th eagle sets ?
