I think that's the one thing coin dealers hate, people playing hardball with them. But hey, it's a dog eat dog world and it's gotta be done. I would keep calling around, even if it's a little bit more of a drive. To have cash in hand and not worry about fees and shipping later feel great. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about eBay but there are times when it's better to deal in person.
Its the way of going about it I guess, some come off as the LCS is trying to rip them off. Given that is the intent sometimes from certain dealers, but not all of course. They need to make money in order to live and what they offer sometimes seems unfair but its according to what they can pay out. I'm no dealer but it boils my blood when someone has something that I don't care too much about and ask me how much will I offer for it. I make an offer, sometimes reasonable and they get all bent up about it. If they know they can make more then take it else where, I'll side with the dealer any day on this subject. Educated or not, you still have to understand people like the dealers need to make money to live. People don't take into consideration about selling on eBay and the issues that might come up. Selling to a dealer is simple, sell it and they pay you. Done deal!
It is NOT that easy sell any more on Ebay for $4400, I saw MORE 5-sets package sold for $4000 or less, than above $4000
I chose to sell to my local dealer for a fair and generous wholesale offer rather that fool with eBay, reserves, fees, packing, shipping, insurance, and non-payers. He'll sell them for $100-$150 more per set and make some local collector happy. Everybody is happy.
the main benefit of selling local is cash in hand versus waiting for payment and other issues that crop up when selling online. Just gotta weigh the risk/reward and if selling online is worth it for you.
Glad others are opening up their minds. Lately all the sales have gone to eBay without trying to sell on craigslist or LCS. I'm very surprised my local craigslist isn't saturated with the sets. I have mine up but no bites yet, maybe it's that $900 obo price tag. LOL, but then again I don't care about selling the rest of the sets I have since I broke even and made profit. The lovely smell of the lacquer is enough for me to keep them. They certainly are beautiful, I'll admit, I was all in to sell them all but one or two sets but now my mind has changed. I think a few others feel the same, especially since they have covered cost on one or two sets after selling a few sets.
I hate to have to post this, but if you are selling on eBay watch out for a buyer named rcrgolfing - my suggestion would be to put him on your blocked bidder list, actually. He won an auction of MS69/PF69 from me yesterday for $960 and went totally ballistic when I told him that I only accept Paypal if it is from an eCheck or Paypal balance. As a side note, I don't take Paypal by debit card or credit card because I have been defrauded three different times on eBay by buyers that paid using a credit card and then after the bullion or rare coins are delivered they do a chargeback on their credit card and get a full refund. While I wasn't thrilled by the end price, I always honor my eBay auctions and was completely ready to sell as long as he followed my payment terms (which are fully disclosed in the listing). This guy not only left negative feedback calling me an "AHOLE" (really he printed that on ebay!) but sent obscenity laced emails through the eBay messaging system and then called me and harassed me on the phone as well. Maybe we should start a thread with bad eBay members like this crazy to let those of us selling on eBay to know which buyers to block/avoid. Thoughts?
Thanks for the head's up, he's now on my list. There's a lot of predatory activity on Ebay and you have to be very careful. But as far as the neg, you can file a claim with Ebay to have it removed. If they find you did nothing to deserve such a rating, it will be removed. Ever since Ebay removed the ability of sellers to neg FB buyers, they've become much better and policing bad buyers. I had a buyer try to out and out rip me off. He bought a coin, paid for it, I sent it and about an hour after I got back from the PO he said he didn't want it and wanted me to refund him his money right now. And that he would, when he received the coin (a $1200 coin, btw) he would send it back. Well, needless to say there was no chance in XXXX that I was going to give him his money back before the coin was returned to me. He also went ballistic so I called Ebay and while I was on hold, the rep called the buyer to inform him of Ebay policy. It took about 15 min before the rep came back on and said he was a real piece of work and that the rep had to hang up on him. The buyer started yelling at the rep telling him that he knew more about ebay policy than both of us combined, blah, blah, blah..., so the rep had to hang up on him and told me under NO circumstances was I to refund him a cent w/o receiving my coin back. Which of course I wouldn't have anyway. I googled his name and I found several coin forums describing this same buyer and the scams he was pulling on them. Sadly, one guy wrote that he ended up losing some $1400 to this guy while others had to battle it out with Ebay to get their money back. Ebay, in a rare show of support, disallowed the buyer from putting any feed back on the sale and eventually then the coin did come back, he got his money back. He's been kicked off Ebay but I'm told his ID was his wife's and his original ID was nuked a few years ago. So I'm sure he's still out there only now using a completely new ID. Sad, isn't it?
What is a charge back? Sorry to learn you were taken advantage of. Over the years I've disputed a couple of charges on my credit cards but the vendor put the charge on "hold" or "review" until the dispute was resolved.
Did you see the all NGC MS/PF70 with two bids at $1,735.00 w/ remaining time for bidding? [h=1]http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-ASE-25...ltDomain_0&hash=item4ab12b5cfc#ht_3883wt_1397[/h]
A buyer is safer paying with a credit card, therefore I always pay with one. In the event that you need to file a paypal dispute and they choose not to refund, even though you are in the right, you still can get your money back. From a seller point of view, it's better if the buyer pays with cash as it removes the possibility of chargeback. But the buyer was wrong to go ape****. He should have just requested to cancel the auction and move on.
Prices will come back up once the glut is worked through - remember the UHR Gold from 2009! Now selling at $3000 and up for an ungraded example!
Unfortunately eBay removed the comment but left the rating - but it still should help. Plus, I have reported him for the harassing phone calls and I think that will ultimately get him NARU'd (nuked for you non-eBay types), then they should remove the score as well.
I sure do. Had one of the first 70's. I hand walked it through PCGS one day service, here in Newport Beach. I don't ever remember them falling 50%.
"They're posting 70 sets with a BIN of $1,850. They lost a 1,000 in 2 weeks. Trending downward." They were selling for $2,700.00 two weeks ago? Amazing
