BRAVO!!! You've set the bar mighty high! My sets are "scheduled for grading", and if I get just half of your numbers, I'll be a happy camper!
Thanks Ken. You bet I remember Crazy Eddie on those commercials on WPIX Channel 11! Go thing we had cable growing up in Upstate NY. Also remember the Chiller theatre on that channel. Scared me big time as a kid!
You know in a way it makes it difficult to consider reconstituting a set back into the original mint packaging, huh? I just assumed there would be at least one set of 69's that I could breakout. That said, I would be more than thrilled to have the same problem as you do.
JACKPOT!! Mine are scheduled for grading, and I hope I do half as well as you did. Congratulations! Did you get the OGP back?
OUCH!!! Yet ANOTHER reason why NGC is the better choice! $5 vs. $30! What a joke! Btw, this just arrived minutes ago in my Email ================================== The 25[SUP]th[/SUP] Anniversary program has been a smashing success for the Mint. Many of you have already submitted your sets for grading. Most submitters of the 25[SUP]th[/SUP] Anniversary sets ask to have their Mint set packaging returned. Unfortunately this is placing severe demands on PCGS. The size and weight of the Mint set packaging requires that it be returned separately from the coins resulting in extraordinary handling and cost. This has caused us to institute the following policy. · Effective for all submissions postmarked after November 18, 2011 PCGS will charge a return shipping fee for 25[SUP]th [/SUP]Anniversary Mint set packaging. · Return shipping fees must be included in the original submission. · Return shipping fee for up to two 25th Anniversary sets is $20. That is two Mint sets for $20. Return shipping fee for one set is $20 as well. · Return shipping fee for three to five 25th Anniversary Mint sets is $30. Any number of Mint sets from three to five will cost $30 to be returned. · Return shipping costs for over five 25th Anniversary Mint sets will be based on the above costs. (ex. Five shipping boxes of five Mint set packages will cost $150.) · Mint set packaging will not be returned for submissions received without prepayment. We will not accept phone calls requesting shipment after your submission has been received. Thanks for your participation in this program. Good luck with your 25[SUP]th[/SUP] Anniversary sets. Thanks, Don Willis President, PCGS
Interesting. The corporate number-crunchers probably saw them losing money on the shipping, or an opportunity to make a few extra million. It remains to be seen how much NGC will charge us to return the OGP. The $1 per set was their "fee", but the fine print stated that additional shipping charges would also apply. It doesn't matter to me as I want it back and would gladly pay the extra shipping to get it back. I'm glad they give us the option to have it returned.
The additional shipping fee is like $35-40 or so to have the item shipped back to you registered and insured. I'm not sure exactly how big the display boxes are, but if they can be packed into a large flat rate box, it shouldn't cost more than what they're charging for the shipping fees + $5. Of course, the "handling" component of shipping will probably end up being a loss center for NGC, but they'd probably come out ahead in the longer run as they are the cheaper option compared to PCGS and will get more business.
My 5 sets went to NGC this morning. Even if they all come back at 70 (I'm hoping!), I still want the OGP.
With a large skew toward 70 grades, doesn't it become difficult to justify paying a premium for *any* grade? At this point, I'm thinking my sets are mostly 70's, whether someone has made it official or not.
If that keeps up and 70 is viewed as 'common', selling them now would be even more advantageous before the awareness of this possibility develops en-mass.
I think most people who are interested in ultra modern coins pretty much already know this. Over the last 10 yrs the mint has become much better at producing near perfect coins. For instance; 2010 Proof eagles - PF69 = 14195; PF70 = 2616 for a ratio of 5:1 1991 Proof eagles - PF69 = 9908, PF70 = 478 for a ratio of 20:1 It will be interesting to see the final numbers but clearly the mint has improved their handling and preparation of eagle coins.
Ha ha, I was thinking the same thing! We'll know where all the 69's and 68's are when I post my grades!
