I don't see why this is a problem for PCGS. They aren't bothered by slapping the "First Strike" designation on coins that cannot be proven to be first strikes so why should they care whether a coin can actually be proven to be minted in San Francisco or not?

NGC had already decided not to recognize the bullion coin as coming from a specific mint. Essentially what it looks like to me is that someone at PCGS freaked out when they saw the COA, called "a mint official" and that person did not want to commit to what had been said before. In fact, there is no way that any of the bullion coins came out of West Point. There were already coins in inventory at SF when the mint decided to use SF coins in the sets, which were assembled at the SF mint. PCGS should at least have the guts to tell us who they talked to and if that person does not want to be identified then PCGS should not listen to anything they say. Tom Jurkowsky, Director of the mint's Office of Public Affairs had already stated that all of the bullion coins were minted in SF. PCGS should have either talked to him directly or simply stuck with the plan in place. There is no reason for any West Point mint coins to be in SF where the sets were assembled unless the mint had planned to use all WP coins from the beginning which is the opposite of what they said. When SF halted bullion production a couple months ago, it was sitting on almost a million coin inventory so there is no way they were unable to set enough coins aside to build the sets. I don't really care where the bullion coin is from, even if it is unknown. What burns me is that it appears that these operations are being run by a bunch of wimps who don't even seem to understand the very business they serve. PCGS claims in the email that the COA was a surprise, even though they knew that the story of where the coins came from had gone from unknown to a specific mint. Did they think the COAs were printed after Mr. Jurkowsky's statement? Did it occur to them how odd it would have been to send WP coins to SF when SF had a huge inventory? Did they talk to Jurjowsky himself for clarification? Of course the initial statement said that the coins could come from anywhere, that is the mint default position, that the coins are all the same, no matter where they come from and that is what they got when they called "a mint official", the canned answer "there is no guarantee that all of the no mint coins were minted there". Mr. Jurkowsky should have been given the opportunity to personally address the issue before any change in policy was made.

Checked the tracking and it says it will be here in the morning. Now do I open it or grade it? I want one set but sure want to flip the others so I can help buy my 1934 S peace dollar in 63.

I opened my five sets this morning, and they all look great:) In one of the sets, three of the capsules had become dislodged from their slots. But thankfully they didn't open up and the capsules weren't damaged. I was a little disappointed that the cases aren't made out of wood (as advertised), but the plastic ones still look nice. Maybe I was being semi-paranoid/a worrywart, but I pulled each S mint coin out of its slot to check that there is indeed the mintmark on the reverse side of each. So what does everyone else who has received their sets think of them?

My husband is not happy with the reverse proof. There seems to be a few dots on the right side of liberty that looks like the reverse proof material (almost like glitter). Anybody else have this on their coins? I'd post a pic but I just can't capture it, it's that small.

If your tracking numbers came later than about 4PM ET then they missed the UPS pick up and will ship today along with the orders that are being marked as shipped now. The tracking numbers are sent to UPS around 3:30PM ET each day and if yours isn't in that group it will actually ship the next day. My first set (12:14, 38326XXX), marked as shipped Tuesday night was treated this way and I have had orders like this in the past. It is just how PBGS operates. They are really, a fairly small shipper, with typically a few thousand shipments per day and they save money by using the once a day plan. For an individual to ship one of these single set packages using the UPS next day air saver service would cost around $90 an five sets about $140, including insurance. The mint saves by contracting and by self insuring but we are still getting a great deal on shipping. Where else do you get overnight shipping for $4.95?

Nice of you to share this useful information with others. How did you learn so much about the shipping process?

I have been buying from the mint website for over 11 years and for the past three have been keeping detailed records of my purchases (the last 70 or so orders). I have also been reading posts like these over that same period, watching with special attention the popular products like these sets. I have absolutely no inside information. I just do careful analysis and use as much of the anchor in my skull as I can keep working.

I just received two more single set packages, one marked as "shipped" at 8AM ET yesterday and the other "shipped" at 12:30PM. Both have identical tracking info, with the "Order Processed: Ready for UPS" time right around 3:30PM ET, the same as every UPS shipment I have had from the mint, at least as long as PBGS has been fulfilling orders.

Just as a side note to all, giving a little insight into the way PBGS operates, one of the things that I don't like: The CC holds for three of my five single set orders have expired before they could be finalized by PBGS, including the holds for the two sets I just received. I fully expect PBGS to eventually charge me for these items but this haphazard CC policy as used by PBGS has bitten them before. Every once in a while they screw up and never charge for an order. It hasn't happened to me but others have reported it. They also open themselves up to anyone mad or greedy enough to cancel their CC after getting the product but before being charged. Not a very smart business practice.
