What is the 2011 25th Anniversary ASE set really worth?

I agree but I'll bet NGC and PCGS have made a ton of money slabbing them as such and a corresponding ton of people fell for it by paying big premiums thinking they bought something special.

Adding to what I just said about effective mintage, you also have to consider all the major retailers and their inventory holdings.

My new effective mintage count, 40,000

and that's if there isn't a lot of people who take these mint offers up for a quick buck and all the people who had family and friends buy some sets. I'm thinking might be closer to 20,000 owners with a lot not wanting to sell. i don't know if will get up to $2000 any time soon but i don't see people losing money.

This is kind of what I've been thinking. You can look at this solely as there will only be 100k 2011 reverse proofs. While somebody else may look at it as, we're going from 250k, to 350k reverse proofs in existence now. I'd have to imagine the people that just want to own one(who don't already) and don't care about the date on it, may far out-weight the number of people collecting every year of them. Just because of the high cost of the entire set in general.

Then you have the fact that nearly 1% of the total mintage is for sale on ebay right now, tonight, over 8 pages. Before they've even left the mint. There's going to be a tremendous number of them re-sold in the coming months. What will happen to the demand?

I have to go back and ask the question, "Why did the mint release them at only $299?" Obivously, they decided this was the most reasonably, economical price point to get them out the door. Which was also fair to everybody. Should they be going for twice that? Can they once ebay is swamped with them? We're all buyers from time to time too. You don't just buy something from somebody to be nice. Everybody wants the good deal. If all the listings are for $600 and people start listing at $500, they're going to be bid up over $500, but less than $600. And on down the line until it may not be worth it to sell any. You don't know how desperate all these people may get to sell their extra sets when the bill's due. If demand doesn't keep up, it won't be pretty.

It may be hard to lose though. I think the reverse proof should be worth about 2 to 300 by itself, easily. Most likely more. If an 06 is worth $200, and the 11s are 2.5x more rare, than one might say these raw, 2011 RPs could be worth as much as $500 by itself. I don't know if demand can support that but we'll see.

Rarity alone does not always create its' own demand. There are many coins like say most 1880's 3 cent pieces that very rare ( probably only a few hundred to a few thousand left ) and many other series not often collected by date where these pieces are are worth $1,000 or less.

What would a key date sell for in a series collected widely by date if there were only 600 of them around, say there were only that many 1916-D dimes ?

However I believe these low mintage ASE's will become popular ( already are) and people will pay it. $600 for the set now seems fair to me.

I agree with this statement, but just had a chuckle... Can you imagine the outrage there would have been if the mint had sold them at $599?? :) People would have been sending pipe bombs and anthrax to the mint! hahaha.

yes, i have to buy some set at that level $575.00 to $625.00. and keep all these two coins. reverse proof and uncirculated with s mint mark. sooner or later these two coins will up like crazy. it might hit $1,000.00 each or more.

Suppose the mint considered $300 a fair price, as it's a 75% or so markup over bullion value. If they wanted the floor set at something like $600, then they may as well have let the secondary dealers handle the distribution completely.
