Did anyone else see this show on cable yesterday? Unbelievable for the toughness of the store workers and customers. A guy comes in with a few gold objects, he is told one has no gold, and he wants to do battle with the owner! Is this show staged?
I've never seen the show, but, like it's "reality" brethren that dominate the airwaves, all televised sequences are staged, if not partially scripted. In other words, the cameras aren't running 24/7 with the hope that something interesting will come 'walking into the shop.' Even "Antiques Roadshow" has every televised item predetermined, long before the taping begins.
I don't think its as staged as Pawn Stars, but all reality shows are staged. I think its sad how little those places pay.
This pawn shop is near my house if anyone cares. I do not think the show is staged like Pawn stars or others. If it is staged, the customers they show going crazy and what not are the best actors on television. This show really gives us Detroiters a bad name though. :|
That's the best of the pawn shows, imo. It's hard to see how they could stage some of the outbursts, but it's also hard to believe the cameras just happened to be there on the guy even before he started acting crazy.
Every show does that. Even the ones you would never think of - game shows, soaps, news cast to a great extent, etc.
Agreed. I run a pawn shop and there is not a week that goes by that I don't get threats to kick my ass, follow me home, kill me, etc. All just part of the gig.
I agree completely. Places that give THAT little for items, give shops like mine a bad name. Even for general merchandise, I never offer less than 60% of what I think I can get for it. For nicer items and jewelry, I have been known to pay up to 90% of resell. I'd rather make 10% off of someone than turn them down and let my competitor make money.
I went to the pawn shop a couple of days ago to pawn some silver coins. They offered me 15 x face. I laughed and said you're nuts! We settled at 23 x face .
Off course the show is staged, The fights are semi staged. People over act to get their 15 minutes of fame.
Say...Why not go back with a baseball bat and demand 28x or you'll start busting up the place...swing the bat around like you're really crazy!! :hammer: It would be great to see one of our own on TV. :hail:
Or would you get that many MORE of them it with a camera crew standing there filming them? Some people are just hams!
Last night they ran the one with the guy who was threatening to jump over the counter and beat up the owner! My guess is that any mention of gun threats would be taken very seriously and the cops would be called, etc.. Back in 2006 a property tax payer in my town was upset with the taxes on his vehicles, etc., some of which he had given away to needy people. He made a veiled threat about coming back with one of his guns. They evacuated the place, locked down town hall and sent a SWAT team to his property, where with a megaphone they called for him to come out of his house and surrender. They found quite a stash of weapons in his house. Out in Utah or other gun friendly state, they would probably handle this differently.

Although I enjoy the show, Swamp People makes me feel the same way. Sorry the first paragraph was meant to be a copy & paste from a previous members quote.
They are obviously playing on stereotypes to the hilt. Pawn Stars is a good show that is educational, clean entertainment and it offers insights into what things are really worth. The other show that has done something in this regard is "Hoarders". When they actually get the hoarder to give up their worthless junk as they are surrounded by people who just want to help, it is redemptive in terms of restoring faith in humanity. I used to live near a hoarder. Now hoarding valuable coins, and precious metals, that is an entirely different and healthy hobby usually.
I used to love Pawn Stars until my friend went to Vegas and visited the store. They asked if he wanted to be on the show and gave him an item to pawn. It was all setup and all they gave him was a t-shirt for appearing. I do not like watching it anymore because of that.
