Bullion Purchases ...

[I'm re-posting this as a new thread as I mistakenly posted it under another thread last night] .....

I'd like the groups opinion. My silver bullion purchases in the past have been limited to "junk" silver - which personally, I consider quite beautiful! - and ASEs.

I've been lucky to pick up a good amount of the junk silver on eBay for under spot (anywhere from 4.87% - 15.52% under spot). Just this past weekend I purchased 3 ASE's for $42/ea and the seller gave me Free Shipping since I purchased all 3 (it was a Buy It Now special).

Last night I purchased 2 Engelhard Silver Prospector coins (and 1985 and 1986) for $42.46 and $42.07 respectively. The seller gave me combined shipping of $3 which brings the total purchase price to $81.06 (or $40.53 per 1 oz coin).

In looking at the various online sites where you can purchase ASEs and Engelhard for a few dollars above spot, those companies seem to crush you on Credit Card purchases and/or shipping. Purchasing thru ebay I'm able to use PayPal for the transactions and shipping seems to be a fraction of the cost.

This is where I'd like your feedback. I feel as if I'm doing really well on my purchases, but not sure if I'm fooling myself. Can I be doing better elsewhere?

Sounds like you're doin' OK Susan.

 

You're doing it right by shopping around for the best bargains.
Watch ebay for deals on 90% silver US coinage.
Hunt your local coin show, flea market or antique mall for deals.
Subscribe to some of the online dealers' promotional emails (for example, Apmex will occasionally feature bullion coins or rounds for 99c over spot with free shipping).
Watch the forums for posts about special promotional offers people have found (there's one about $39 ASEs from Littleton w free shipping).

 

Thanks guys and good advice on the promotional emails @sodude. I didn't realize you can get free shipping from those companies.

There is such a huge disparity in terms of what some of the silver sells for, it's comforting to know that I'm making the right purchases. Since most of my buying takes place on eBay my feeling is that some of the prices are highly inflated due to individuals getting caught up in the auction mentality. I've been setting a max price I want to pay and if I lose the auction, I lose the auction.

 

That alone can save you a bundle. Let the bidiots over pay.......

Thanks again Dan! I just called (the phone rings in to Universal Coin & Bullion) and they told me I needed to call back Monday to speak to a broker. If I can pick one up for $42 w/ no shipping, I agree ... seems like a great deal!

 

In 1980 I got this while in Germany.packing up to move to a new home we inherited. I found it in my old Army thing.hex I had forgot I had!!!

Since I haven't seen the ad itself, is this just a straight up deal, or is Universal Coin & Bullion going to try to wrap me in to some type of continuity club that I need to cancel out of?

When I've bought these Universal deals before, they do follow up with a phone call with things they want to try to sell me. I just say no and that is the end of it.

Just as a correction, 3209 grams equals 113.2 ounces, and at $40 an oz thats about $4600, not 82K. Hate to see Jello jumped in a dark alley for 77K less than what he was thought to have

I paid $480.00 in 1980 for it. now to sell it I going to have to cut it up. I don't want to have to do a 1099. but at 60yr old I just may pass it down to my son.hex for 30 yr + I had forgotten I even had the bar.

1) You're figuring avoirdupois ounces, but PMs are denominated in troy ounces (31.1 g).
2) Can you hook me up with some of that $40/oz palladium?

 

I also didn't realize there are lots of dealers and small companies provide you the best deal and free shipping to your home and you can sell your Silver and Gold products online from your home can you imagine that.. Its good to best deals for you scrap metal products.

Susan, I hope you know the 86 Engelhard Prospector is worth more. The 83 and 86 are higher in cost.

 

The Grizzly I ordered from Universal Bullion arrived today .... it's a beauty!
Low and behold, I also got my first phone call from Universal Bullion this afternoon ... trying to sell me a 1986 $25 Gold Eagle. I've now plugged their number in to my cell so I can avoid those future calls. Their pricing is through the roof!
