that doesn't have anything to do with it. the president can be dead while his widow is alive.

Wrong again. The act that authorized it.

    ^ 31 U.S.C. § 5112(o)(5)(A) says:
“ IN GENERAL- The bullion coins issued under this subsection with respect to any spouse of a President shall be issued on the same schedule as the $1 coin issued under subsection (n) with respect to each such President.

Exactly as I posted. Maybe you don't understand the requirements for the $ coin.

they won't mint a coin with a spouse's image who is still alive.

You continue to be wrong. :foot-mouth:

The act, as written, explicitly states that the first spouse coins will be released at the same time as their respective $1 President coins.[25] Because the act links a First Spouse's eligibility for a coin to that of the Presidential spouse, it means that a living First Spouse may appear on a coin. Currently, one living First Lady, Nancy Reagan, is eligible.

When Gerald Ford died, Betty Ford's coin became inevitable.

The requirement is that the president has been dead for at least 2 years before the coin would have to be issued. There is no requirement that the first lady be deceased as well.

It is rare, but it has happened. The 1995 Special Olympics Commemorative Dollar coin featured the bust of founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver and was issued while she was still very much alive.

This may also happen a few times with the Presidential Dollar series. It looks as if the first ladies are going to live long enough to see the end of the series and in so doing, will see their own busts on gold half eagles when they are minted.

There were also a few commemoratives that had living people on em. I think the sesquicentennial had coolidge and the arkansas commemorative had a living senator on it. A bad precedent, IMO

Anyone see this article from NPR? A northern California Congresswoman (Jackie Speier) plans to introduce legislation to end the Presidential dollar program. That would have the effect of ending the First Spouse program, as well. :so-sad::brokenheart:

I hope they can find a way to continue the First Spouse series even if the Presidential dollars go away. :eek:hya:

they should continue, even if they lower the mintages and sell to people who actually order and want them.
    dollar AND first spouse coins.

Actually, I can think of a few "positives" that might come out of an early end to the First Spouse program...assuming it ends if the Presidential dollar program ends.

For one thing, it will give us time to catch our breath (financially). For another, the series will most certainly begin anew...starting where it left off. That would require fresh legislation which would be the perfect opportunity to lobby Congress for another "Liberty" design to take the place of the "Alice Paul" debacle!!!

The way I understood what would take place is that the series would not be terminated, but rather the mintage productions would just drop to meet collector demand. So therefore, the series will still be intact as would the First Spouse series. Poor Tom is going to have a heart attack!
