Texas John Lets be straight about this, I did no such thing nor was it my intent to imply such a thing! What I did do was change a word to something that would not offend others. It really does not matter to me what Webster says as I know how the term can be taken. That is all I did and it was done in the best interest of the thread and forum. No one but the 3 of us probably even knew what the word that I edited until your last post. The rule of thumb on CT is use language that is appropriate for a 1950 family tv show. I do not believe you would find this word used on a show even in today's main stream tv. I did not think you meant anything hurtful by it just did not feel it is appropriate.
Topic at hand guys... lets remember "sticks and stones" and such and not worry about words people use. I don't think I've ever been offended by something someone wrote on the internet, i don't have the time or energy for that. I originally thought this post would have been from a few days ago when silver was close to $50. Right now we are looking like we'll be below $40 soon again.
Nobody knows the future, I sure don't, but it seems likely that as soon as futures traders adjust their positions to the new margin requirements, silver will stop dropping in price pretty quickly and may even recover. It might not take very long.
I agree, no one knows the future, which is why I am find it interesting when I read a lot of "when silver hits $50" though we don't know it will. I do think it will run up and past $50 someday, but I'm not positive of it.
You can justify the editing all you want, the word has absolutely nothing to do with anything racial and anyone who takes it that way is ignorant and any offense they may take is ignorant as well. To censor someone because you think some ignorant fool might be insulted is wrong. There are idiots out there that take offense to the word black. Just ask the Rolling Stones about that. Does that mean we can't use the word black too? That falls right in line with editing out edited. Which BTW is in auto correct on my IPhone. If it were so bad it wouldn't be there.
When I look at a silver chart, it doesn't appear that the price has broken any significant trend line or support level - yet. So for now, it's a bull market until it ain't.
Censorship often comes with the best intentions. It masquerades as avoiding offense to others or maintaining some kind of "standard" of decorum or decency. But at the end of the day, even with the best of intentions, it is evil. Those who practice it would burn books with bad ideas in them. Those who support it from the sidelines would cheer them on.
The word was censored not because of a dictionary, iphone, or whether someone is an ignorant fool. It was censored because it doesn't fit in with the desires of the owner and administration. It was not necessary, and as the dictionary illustrates, there are alternative words. So in the end, the moderator tried to make things easy and not a drama. Jim
In the end drama was created, a respectful and knowledgeable CoinTalk member has left the forum and the owner and moderators are taking a servile bow to the race hustlers among us. Shame...
Everyone who has read my posts for a long time knows that I sometimes like to find the boundaries of acceptable posting behavior. But in the end, the moderators have the last word and leaving because of that, regardless of reason, doesn't make sense. It's about sharing knowledge and having fun, and not about making a point. It's a bullion forum, not a social forum.
And this is why I'm a fan of "unmoderated" forums. Forums that are allowed to regulate themselves, forums where the members are, oh, I don't know, treated like adults and expected to behave as such amongst one another. If someone acts like an idiot, they'll be told that, and if they continue to act like one, they're eventually run out of the forum.
Heaven forbid someone gets offended. For all the violence and drugs and gore that we are exposed to in movies, it's amazing that people can still get offended by an innocent word. It's just like "racial profiling". In this post 9/11 world, if I get on an airplane and a 70 year old white female or a 25 year old middle eastern male are both reaching into their pocket, OF COURSE I am going to be more concerned about the middle eastern man. It's not racist. I have friends from many backgrounds. It's called PROBABILITY. Being good at math. How many white 70 year old female terrorists have there been. No different than if an 8 year old boy walked into my house compared to a 30 year old wearing a mask. Flame away. Back on topic, this is a healthy correction and a great time to buy. If you don't like someone's price, sell it to someone else. Nobody is forcing anyone to sell. It's a free market.
Ripley... Interesting point. What better way to get hard silver than to panic people into selling, and get it cheap in the process.
I was a moderator for a long time on one of the most popular fish boards in the early 90s. I understand about making sure some fools dont ruin your site. Using a perfectly legitimate word does NOT fall into that category. No, there is NO reason to use another word if the word you are using is legitimate. Again, you can justify all you want to. You can spin it how you want. The simple fact is this: You are censoring someone over the fear of an idiot responding in an idiotic manner. I am sure you will come up with some more carefully worded excuses explaining how what was done was not unreasonable and how the OP was completely at fault. If spouting those platitudes makes you feel better abut it, go for it. Those of us capable of thinking for ourselves and with just a little common sense know better. Since I have joined this forum I have been extremely annoyed with the moderators here. I full well realize that the mods have the right to run this site how they please. Thats what I did. I like to think I was a whole lot more reasonable. So, this is my last post here. I cant enjoy posting if I have to wonder if the words I use are not going to offend the PC cowards here. Enjoy and adios.
For those who don't care for "PC", here is the key sentence on the page where you post: Keep it clean, like a 1950s family television show. We've all seen "I Love Lucy" or "The Donna Reed Show" or even "Lassie" for that matter. I will bet one ASE that you never heard the word in question on any of those shows. Why? Because it sounded exactly like another word. The owner of this forum pays the costs for it (no, the internet is not free). I own several websites and ran my own forum, so I know the expense and the headaches. We are guests here, and the house rules are in plain sight.
If the "7 largest" silver dealers were to actually collude to this, I'd guess they won't be the 7 largest for a very long time. Collusion would be a pretty hard thing to prove, as of right now all we have to go on is hearsay. I'm not an attorney, but even if they did collude, who would be damaged? You're not obligated in any way to sell to them, in fact I'd guess that 4 or 5 of them wouldn't buy from the public.
