Is it: a) it's the most uninteresting coin of the 2010 series? b) it represents the most uninteresting site of the 2010 series? c) we're tired of the 5-ounce program already? d) the cost? e) post your own reason Will sales be faster with the more iconic places, such as Yellowstone and Yosemite?
Personally I think the quarter set should have ended with the states/territories. Its too much now. Especially lately such as the four different lincolns, the different backs to the jefferson nickels. I think they should pick a design and stick with it for 25 years or so. Keep the special design ideas to commemoratives.
I have a strange feeling that the mint is just sorting out their orders, including removing duplicate orders. They probably do not know yet how many legitimate unique orders they have so far, so are still accepting orders until they can figure it all out. It did not help that their server crashed and the phone lines were down for well over a couple of hours as well. Considering all the hype and the offers from companies to buy before it went on sale, my guess is that it is already sold out but just not posted yet. This is a unique situation here. It is the first in the series, first ever 5 ounce collector version, lower mintage than comparable bullion issue. With ordering limits of one per customer, these may be spread out well enough among the collector base so that no dealer has any sizable quantity to sell, which may increase prices. Of course, I could be wrong and only time will tell. TC
+1 I think they are just making sure and putting people on the waiting list now. According to the order numbers I think they went through about 30,000 in 24 hours, certainly they were not all for the Hot Springs coin but i'm pretty sure it is sold out. That being said I also think the Hot Springs and Mount Hood coins and the least desireable of the 2010 group. Personally I think the Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Yosemite coins are going to be the keys as many people were only looking to get one of those. Betcha the ebay premiums for those 3 all top $500 outta the gate no problemo.
My fingers are crossed that I got mine. I ordered at about 6 PM on Thursday (forgot until I got home from work). The website seemed too fast like it was sold out already. I'm probably reading too much into it but I think it is sold out. I might get lucky and get one because some else doesn't qualify.
I disagree about the Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Yosemite being the keys (unless of course their mintages are lower than 27K or an error is found). Remember the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) commemorative. Many people (including me) thought that demand was going to be huge. People were saying things like: Everyone who has ever been affiliated with the BSA will want one, the BSA coin collecting merit badge will now require purchase, family members will purchase them as mementos from jamborees, etc, etc. None of this ever happened to a significant degree, and the coin was a bust (although most everyone who purchased initially has done well with the recent surge of silver spot). I think the same will apply to the well-known 2010 national parks noted above. The vast majority of people who go there on vacation could not care less about coins. I also have to disagree about the visual appeal of the 2010 designs. I have shown my 2010 silver proof set to over a dozen non-collectors (but self-proclaimed expert shoppers with fine taste) and asked them which ATB quarter was most attractive and would look best if made larger. The vast majority selected the Hot Springs and the few that did not do so selected Mount Hood (due to liking mountain climbing or skiing). When I asked why people liked the Hot Springs, they said it was due to the sharp contrasts on the surface and overall eye appeal. Many felt that the others looked like clip art tokens. I realize that some on this forum have said that the Hot Springs looks like a bidet, but I did not get that response at all. I was at a coin show last month in which a dealer had some 5 ounce 2010 bullion issues for sale individually and told me that he had sold out of the Hot Springs right away. Again, I think collectors will always want the first one issued. TC
I agree with both TC and JJK, but for different reasons. Although all of the designs look good in the quarter size, due to the frosting, the Hot Springs and the Mount Hood look the best in the 5-ounce size, due to the indentations and variety in the design. The finish of the Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon are too monochromatic with the same polished finish throughout the design. However, having been to all 5 places over the years, I would be most likely to return to Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. Hot Springs and Mount Hood would be last on my list. If someone is buying these for eye appeal, I believe the Hot Springs and Mount Hood would be the logical choice. If they are buying them as a memory, I think Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon would be more popular.
My son, who lives at a different address, received a cancelled order email yesterday. The mint said it was cancelled because the same credit card was used for my purchase and his. First time I’ve bumped into this problem. So, if any others had the same experience, they may want to try to reorder using a different card - the mint said that should work. I complained because really, he’s in a different household and I just paid for it for him.
I'm thinking it's the 'curse of the 5 ounce coin'! Nothing has gone right, nothing! Starting with apmex, and those delays, to some getting graded coins and others not, to computer crashes! What could happen next?
that's simple...china starts "minting" coins to make up for demand.... gotta love lead filled coins...
This is nothing new and has happened to me in the past. The only way to avoid it is to use different credit cards for each address. I would try to re-order ASAP and hope for the best.
I ordered late on Thursday evening, after I assumed it would have been sold out already. Today, my order status says "In stock and reserved". Does that mean I will get it, or could I still be on the waiting list?
My order went through at 12:06pm, and my order status says the same. Then again, there are people on here who had a much higher order number than mine and they already have their coins. My card has yet to even be charged. Who knows how the Mint thinks?
The mint shipped my Hot Springs puck yesterday. I put in another order today. I wonder if they will accept or reject the order.
