Maybe we could start a thread where we report the best prices for junk morgans. as a "junk silver", best price linked to spot. how about it, let's see some good prices and vendors.
Got my first one (1890-O) at a flea market/garage sale from a guy who sells from antique shops. I payed $33 even for it, and melt at that time was a little over $33. On top of that it is in better quality than "junk", not amazing quality at all but better than G4 without question. I thought in the low F range. Probably solid VG I just haven't put the time in to define it yet.
I love them. I like to buy as in good as condition as I can for the best price. just hard to find a good place to buy them. I'd like to hear about places better than ampex etc.
That guy was trying to sell off silver. I got that Morgan and a SLQ both for under melt. I saw a tube marked $33 and saw a Peace on top and asked if I could see it, as I was looking for my first Morgan. Well I picked the best Morgan I saw in it and paid under spot. I couldn't have been happier, and a good experience acquiring my first of the design.
At my local coin shop, he usually sells them for $1 over melt. Once silver reached about $30 he started seperating them into 3 bags, $1 over melt, $2 over, and $3 over, based on quality. The deals arn't as good as they used to be. At least you can still cherry pick them though. I know your looking for online vendors, but just thought I would mention.
Melt at that time for a Silver Dollar was a little over $33. I bought it last weekend when silver (1 ozt) was between $43 and $44. Sorry I should have mentioned "melt value for a Morgan" in the beginning.
no, that's OK, it's all good. last coin show I went to they wanted me to buy a roll of 20 morgans for a little over spot at the time and i passed. I bought some gold coins that day. I'm not a huge rare coin guy and I know most morgans aren't rare. I;m looking for quantity.
A nearby dealer has BU morgan and peace dollars for $36.50 each. I got a 23 peace in a 63 for that price.
I bought some 5 Peace's around spot price but they had been cleaned. they look great though. I'm looking at this as bullion. but I like my bullion to be interesting and diverse.
I can buy Morgans (VF/AU) for spot from this gentleman who lives about 15 miles from me (which is A LOT by Hawaii standards). The last time that I bought some from him, I actually told him that one of his coins (beautiful strawberry) might be worth at least $100 (common date, but would grade MS-63 or so) to the right collector. I told him to hang onto it and keep asking around until he found someone who specifically collects those.
Got these last week for $35 ea. Which was about $1.50 over spot at the time. They're all common dates, but most are AU/BU. Not bad to pay only a buck or so over spot for BU morgans. Another advantage of the silver boom is that the premium paid for nicer common date morgans has become quite thin.
I wish I had some where local that I could pick up BU common date morgan's for close to spot ... around me the best I've been able to find is VG 1921 morgans for $4 over melt
