I actually find it interesting that the prices have run up so much on this.

It's not really that a low mintage (115,178) when you compare it to some of the first spouse gold coins that have mintages of 5,000 to 10,000. I think that it's just beautiful and historical.

The same thing happened with the 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar which also is not low mintage (272,869) but likewise sells for a big premium over melt.

I think when you are dealing with these historical coin designs, the demand is a lot higher than normal (as compared with some of the homely modern (and sadly boring) commemoratives that nobody seems to really want).

And like they always do, they minted more UHR $20s than they could sell and purportedly did melt those remainders down. I read that in one of the coin blogs a while back, but can't find the figure. It was pretty significant how many beyond the 115,178 sold that they melted. Such a waste and shame to produce them, store them, then melt these fine looking coins. I guess all the boxes, books, etc. get incinerated too. :(

I wish I could find that article again where I read the figure they had to melt down for other precious metals coin programs use. Coin News? Mint News Blog? Numismatic News? Coin Update.... so many sources to sift through.

you know ... i want to like them ... but who wants a coin with Boy Scouts or Louis Braile on it? with all the great talent in this country, you think they could find some really inspired engravers to do some beautiful new allegorical representations of liberty or freedom. they are too hung up on making coins with actual real life scenes in them (like some of the reverses on the First Spouse series ... UGLY)

Yup, I hear ya. :) But future generations may think otherwise. Time will tell. There used to be contemporary complaints about the reverse of the Morgan Dollar looking more like a buzzard than an eagle. My, how times have changed......:)

Just wait. I have my 2009 UHR in for grading with the PCGS now and my 2007 Jefferson's Liberties (proof and unc). :D We shall see.

So I am somewhat new to coin collecting but I really like this coin. PCGS MS70's are going for close to 3k and ms70 PL for $6500. Would I be crazy to pay that kind of money for one? Anyone think they will get much cheaper as time goes on or more expensive?

A slabbed MS70 of this coin is worth about ~$350 over a completely ungraded example. Considering how much ANY version of this coin has appreciated in the last year, I don't think slabbing is worth it as long as you have the original capsule, box & book.

I'm hoping for cheaper. I didn't get one when they came out in 2009 and wish that I did. I will be looking for one once gold drops below $1,300/oz.

I ordered mine when the Mint let you. It wasn't in the 1st hour, but I was close. Cost me $1189. Think it was a $200 premium to spot that day.

Just got my UHR back from the PCGS and she graded MS69. :) Keeping her in the collection.

I just had to BUMP this thread one time. This is such a great record of the rise of gold prices entwined with the history of the 2009 UHR Double Eagle.

It's interesting to read how folks felt about the price of gold...way back then. :grandpa:

I bit, although I grimaced at the time. What a difference a few years makes. There is a bit of numismatic/collector desire for this piece though........

And shoot, it's been that long? :)

I was reading through the thread and there were a lot of folks that felt the $1195 price was way too high. I bought one at $1195 and another at $1495...just a minute before they went off sale. Like everyone else, I kept waiting for the price of gold to come down...but it just kept going up.
