Some people might think this is a personal question, and you don't have to answer. I was just curious how much silver or gold other people own.
Where do you store it? At the bank? In your basement? A safe?
I'm just a youngin trying to learn what I can.

I have alot of silver coins, dimes, quarters, half dollars, silver dollars. And two Gold coins, $5 Liberty Half Eagle and a $20 Saint Gaudens. A few of my favorite Silver coins are my 1996 ASE and my 1943 Merc dime in MS-67. My '96 ASE was not for an investment or anything, just a special coin because it was the year I was born. The thing I like about it, is that my birth year was a key date year :D.

Edit:, Forgot to add, I store them all in a water/fire proof safe with a combination lock.

Very cool. I have a few ASE's and 6 or 7 90% commems. Then there are the 4 or 5 years of silver proof sets and quarter sets. Total it's around 20 oz's. All of it is from Christmas gifts :) I store them in a bag on the floor in my always locked apartment on an upper floor cause I'm too poor to get a safe.

I got broken into last year (in a different apartment). Luckily they were only interested in crappy (broken) computers, video game systems and camera's. They could have easily doubled what they made by looking on the floor and taking my coins. Needless to say, I am more careful in locking my doors and windows now. I also got a big dog :) That should scare away some burglars; it works on the maintenance and internet guys.

Sorry to hear you got broken into, I haven't had that happen but it must be pretty irritating. Before I ever got a safe, I stored my coins in small plastic cases (no pvc) in a dresser. I have a dog also, but she is too fat and lazy to be a watch dog, lol.

    Haha. Fat dogs are funny.
Gotta be careful with what you put in your dressers. Thieves like to go through your underwear drawer. Just ask my girlfriend.

I have completely recovered from the robbery (except my movie collection) and came out of it being much more cautious.

Haha, that sounds a bit weird. That's why I got a safe, it weighs 100 lbs, and added the weight of my silver and gold coins, it's pretty heavy, I added some bricks around it to weigh it down even more. You can bolt it to the floor, but I prefer to use just dead weight. I'm pretty cautious about my collection myself, I only open it about once a month.

Word of warning. I had an attempted robbery a few years ago. My wife pulled up to the house and scared them off before they could take anything. They had all of their "loot" staged in my garage ready to go INCLUDING my 150lb safe from upstairs. They were clearly going through stuff upstairs when one of them found the safe and dropped everything else to drag the thing downstairs.
So long story short my safe is now in the basement, bolted to the floor, and covered up with a fake box labeled "X-mas lights." (not actually what it says but you get the idea)

Good trick, I might try something like that. Better to be safe than sorry though. There hasn't been many robberies around here but that doesn't mean that there will never be any more.

I had a robbery a few years ago too, and was very lucky - we lost roughly 24K in the robbery (mainly electronics and jewlery); but, the only coins the took were some I had rolled to take to the bank (I think it was around $90 worth). In fact, the fool's knocked over a rather large box of proof set (I want to say ~30-40, mainly newer silver sets). Since - I store my coins in a 750lb gun safe. I dont have it bolted down... but, with the weight of the safe itself, ~80K wheat pennies in the bottom, and tons of other stuff - I doubt they will carry it out. If they want to try though, they need to remove the door and casing for both the closet and the bedroom first. :)

i only own 3 ounces i keep the junk in a little wooden box, and i have a commem and 2 bahamian silver coins in my binder, so in case of fire i can grab them and just run, but in the basement fire safe, there is 50 silver dimes, and a stack of at least 20 silver kennedys, and my dad has more in the saftey deposit box

If a safe isn't bolted to the floor, it's only use is for fire protection (if it's even rated for that). Try not to fall into the false sense of security that it being heavy is going to keep thieves from moving your safe - if anything, the added weight reassures that their job is going to be profitable.

Also, unless your dog is trained to intimidate strangers, it's not going to do much except give a burglar a nice greeting.

There's lots of things we do that make us feel safe, but only some of them actually make a difference!

I have enough. The bulk is stored in a safe deposit box, but my roll finds are kept at home in an inconspicuous place.

I agree to a large degree, though know that between the alarm, dogs, people, etc... mine is fairly safe. Hell, if they can move it in 10 min or less I would almost let them have it. By my guess it weighs in around 1,800 lbs ATM. Also, the added weight can give the impression that the safe is bolted to the floor (assuming you do not have a basement where they can check).

Until we moved, I have kept this bolted to the floor. I do not now because I do not want to put it in the basment (which does not have adaquate climate controls for storing such IMO) and because the safe is stored on the first floor. Since it would be bolted through a wooden subfloor with access from below I do not see the value. However, we bought this house on a whim (moved half way accross the country, while we still had a house in FL, rented knowing we would have the FL home forever - rented here and ended up buying our home as a foreclosure at a dirt cheap price). We will be moving in a year or two (I hope) and plan on building a "safe room" to store my coins (safe).

Most in safety deposit boxes, maybe 2000 ounces silver, a few ounces of gold. THis is the junk. The better coins I have no idea since I never once had crossed my mind they would ever get melted, or be valued on PM prices.

Good idea about the basement for the safe. Too many people think just because its "heavy" that it is protecting it. Thieves see safe and will do anything to move it if they can. I have a gun safe in the house, and besides weighing about 1000 pounds loaded, it is also bolted into the concrete. They better have C4 or a jackhammer and a heavy winch if they want that.
