WOW! Another Early FS Sellout

Spock...I saw a good comment on MintNewsBlog recently...they pointed out that the Mint is only obligated, by law, to strike at least one (1) coin and no more than the preannounced limit. There's nothing in the law that requires them to mint any specific amount.

Beginning with the Jane Pierce coins, it's apparent that the Mint has adopted a new policy of estimating the number of coins they expect to sell and minting to that number. If the number is off...oh well!!

Given the likely low interest in the coins that are in the queue (of the lesser known First Spouses...and Alice Paul), I wouldn't be surprised to see an Unc mintage less than 1,000...and THAT would be truly amazing!

That "possible" low mintage may be a result of the Mint's low estimate rather than a true reflection of interest in the coin. These are interesting times...I plan to mortgage the house (if need be) to keep going!

I'm pulling the "Full Monty" on this series!!! (What?! No emoticon for that?)

Being on-sale for 7 months isn't a chance?! I agree we could get a little warning though. Maybe we should go Canadian. After I bought a coin from the RCMint, they've sent me frequent emails updating me on the percentage of the mintage that has sold so far for various products.

Ok so the US Mint has sold out several issues of FS, BUT is this having ANY measurable effect on these issues prices in the secondary market? have the prices gone up because they are sold out?

Demand is still soft even with Sold Out issues, therefore it appears that the Mint guessed the market pretty good.

Nice! I doubt Lincoln will sell out soon, the Mint thought it would be really popular. It might not last until December though...

Thanks to this thread, I did go ahead and pull the trigger on Jane Pierce. I've been regretting not jumping on a couple of the earlier ones, especially seeing that they're already pulling a premium on eBay. I still don't know whether the series will ever take off, but it just boggled my mind to have a chance at a coin with a mintage that low.

Hey, where's the link? I want to read that article.

I still haven't received my unc Fillmore. I got an email from the mint that said something about a April 5 date to ship.

Lousy communication. If they tell me I'm not going to get my Fillmore, I'm going to be po'ed.

I have to say that it's my opinion that the " First Spouse " series is probably going to be the best investment vehicle for collectors for years to come. Those that started in the beginning and complete the entire series will have a significant historical collection .

I feel like a proof collector in the 1800's- not much interest in the product...

Yes...secondary market demand is weak...and it will stay that way for some time due to the many people (such as myself) that are barely hanging on and the many folks that have given up and put their collections up for sale.

HOWEVER, if you can complete the set, your descendents will speak very highly of you 100 years from now!! ...(I promise).
