If you are referring to the video, they state the only reason they are mining is because the only way to buy anything is with gold because of hyperinflation. Fear of hyperinflation is the main reason why people get into pms I believe. Most pmers see hyperinflation and collapse of currancy as out doomsday.

Simply mining? You've got to be kidding. Sure is doomsday for them.

How sad. For them. For you too.

it's a pocket of poverty, not a doomsday end times scenario for the whole world.
to get yourself sad would be dumb.

Lucyray, I could not have said that better myself.
This is a natural response from Americans who have never really faced adversity to the extent that they would have to do whatever they could to survive. I recall my service days where water and ammo was all we had at times. This is not fun by any means.
I feel that day is coming for all of us in the USA. I am doing what I can to prepare. I do hope this does not become a reality for us, but if it should happen, I am stock piling all I can that will help me (survive the despair or the potential of) civil unrest.

That means protecting all I have with every ounce of vigor I have.
Therefore the weapons, PM's and most important of all the mindset to be able to deal with it.

....but the video only works if the gold is valued OUTSIDE of that area. If the whole world is in economic collapse, there IS no outsiders to pay you for your gold, so gold becomes a plaything of no economic use.

Btw, yes the video is sad, but its a self imposed poverty by Mugabe. Zimbabwe was the breadbasket of Africa, feeding half the continent until Mugabe took power, killed and exiled the farmers, and totally bankrupted the country. This is the REAL facts of poverty in Africa, self imposed by their rulers and fighting civil wars for the right to receive foreign aid from Europe and US. You want to erase poverty in Africa? Stop giving them foreign aid, and stop allowing their rulers access to numbered Swiss bank accounts.

the only way for the world to collaspe as a whole is an extinction event. Then no one would care. But if an economic crisis unfolds and our currency is worthless, you better have PM's or you will suffer. Does not get any simpler than that.
I can only hope that the general intelligence of people helps them realize this.

Yes, as I have said if YOUR currency is undergoing massive inflation, then ANY commodity that is exportable provide monetary safety. But I wouldn't say it had to be an extinction event to cause worldwide economic collapse. How much did silver go up during the depression? None. The whole world was in bad shape, so there was no outside demand for silver.

Just pointing out to think about what you are saving for, if its to protect against your currency inflating, then it is reasonable to buy PM or commodities. If it is for a worldwide event, then PM are silly to invest in, better buy ammo, seeds, and land. If people are buyig PM's for a reason, they should be clear that PM's will HELP if that reason happens, no?

Well, that, and it was directly (physically) tied to the value of our currency.

It will take a lot more then the collapse of the U.S. to end the world. I mean look at the recent economic collapse... widespread panic in the U.S. and it's nearest neighbor and largest trading partner, Canada, barely blinked.

Even when the Roman Empire fell, the world didn't end, it just changed. Maybe when and if the U.S. does collapse each state will decide to become it's own country, or maybe the South will rise again... I don't know.

But if history has taught us anything, change is inevitable.

It is very interesting that today, with the Saudi question , the report that China had less trade, Spain was downgraded, Portugal's default insurance at highest level since January , the Euro, Pound, and the Aussie dollar dropped, and the Dow is over 200 points down, most of the scenarios are just as most of the PM pundits have said is when Gold and Silver would lead the way. Not so, obviously. The USD still currently controls the movement of PM.

If one truly believes that the USD will eventually be worthless, they should be big time buyers now, although I wouldn't recommend it, as the rest off the world ( IMO) has farther to go than the US.

Good points Jim. My fear, (or at least worry regarding silver prices), is that the politicians will finally show some political courage and tackle fiscal problems in the US. If this happens, and the markets see real progress on the deficit, you will see some serious downward pressure on PM prices, and increases in the dollar. The Euro still has some serious issues, Japan has worst debt than us, and the yuan is not an international currency. Any positive movement by the US will boost the dollar, and will depress PM prices. World scares that boost the dollar do not NECESSARILY decrease PM, but boosts to the dollar due to debt reduction I believe will.

Every investment has something wrong with it, including silver and gold. The investment analysis process should uncover the negatives so that the investor can decide whether or not to buy it anyway if the positives seem to outweigh the negatives. So what I try to do here is to point out why I still like and own silver, but at the same time talk about the negatives that will eventually bring the price back to reality. When I invest in anything, it is with the expectation that it will make life better in the future. I don't think there is even a 1% chance that there will be a collapse on the scale of what many folks here seem to expect. And if there is, I sincerely doubt that the lone survivalists will fare well. It will be the people involved in close-knit communities that will do the best.

I think the lone wolf can survive, but it's an unpleasant existence. I'd rather work with other people to improve life in the unlikely and unfortunate event that some of the predictions here come to pass. But I just don't see things getting that bad. A repeat of the 70s or 30s might be as bad as it gets.

I'm not worried about doomsday, not that I worry about much of anything really ;) but the reason I got into PM's is what some people might consider that scenario. Sure, if the world ends it's not gonna matter what material possessions you have. However, if paper money becomes worthless as it has in other nations throughout history then PM's will ensure that you have something of value to get the bare necessities instead of sitting on squadoush. The profit is a nice bonus, but I'm not in this for the money. I'm in it for preservation of self and liberty, by not allowing myself to be placed in a position of dependency.

    [edit]
and yes, I know you can't eat PM's, and they don't protect themselves =) They are not to be solely relied upon, but are certainly better than paper money in most scenarios.
