It's not just in Egypt-- this sort of thing has been occurring in other countries in that region, including Tunisia, Algeria, Jordan and Yemen. Egypt is currently grabbing most of the attention, but there is a lot of tension that is bubbling to the surface throughout Northern Africa and Western Asia. If this catches on in Saudi Arabia, watch out.

I was thinking that Bush and O'Bama spouses were left out in the original planning for First Spouse Releases. Seems like both were left off the list (O'bama was elected after the list was issued) Yet, that does not explain why the list stopped before Mrs. Bush or perhaps an even earlier First Lady. Sorry I do not have a source for this list I happened across in the past.

The comment was mainly in jest. However, I don't see why the other spouses wouldn't continue to be honored after the current extent of this program, further on in history and past their own life times, they may be inducted into an extension of the FS series. I also recall reading at one point in the past the current reasoning why they were left off, but I also do not have a reference now that I can come up with.

I think it may have something to do with the fact that many spouses were still living at the time of the legislation

Silver was on a down trend, but this may continue to be -- or really develop into -- a market-changer.

The way I read Title 31;Subtitle 4;Chaper 51;Subchapter 2;Section 5112-o "First Spouse Bullion Coin Program", the First Spouse program (5112-o) is linked to the Presidential Coin Program (5112-n).

5112-o5A...The issuance of coins commemorating First Spouses..."shall be issued on the same schedule as the $1 coin issued under subsection (n) with respect to each such President."

5112-n2E...limits Presidential coins to deceased Presidents..."No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President.

The First Spouse coin program termintates when the Presidential Coin program terminates...

5112-n8..."The issuance of coins under this subsection shall terminate when each President has been so honored, subject to paragraph (2)(E), and may not be resumed except by an Act of Congress."

This means that when it comes time to honor a President with a Presidential dollar coin, that President must have been dead at least two (2) years. However, there's nothing that says the First Spouse must also be deceased.

For instance, if (God forbid!) Jimmy Carter should die tomorrow and Roseline Carter is still alive when it's time for the Jimmy Carter Presidential dollar, Roseline Carter would also be honored with a First Spouse coin.

    That's my understanding, anyway.

Besides members of the Presidential family and foreign nationals fleeing... if people are not able to leave, they certainly may be in need of daily food stuffs and need to buy basic things.

In my experience, currency still gets used for basics until complete collapse of government, but a ticket out takes hard money or US currency. Times change, maybe today it's the Yaun ? But I truly doubt that cheap junk metal coins or paper is going to do it, that's for sure. Narcotics, jewels, gold or silver probably are the only real money ?

Media has reported bank ATMs are still operating, people still using cash despite scenes of banks smashed and ATM receipts tossed/littering the streets.
Maybe the population isn't fleeing, but foreign media may be paying their way in to report and get past check points. All these live mainstream heads sure high-tailed it over there over the weekend to cover the story.

We all know oil and water don't mix... threaten passage through the Suez canal and your oil is even further separated from the mix.

Who next eases current events in the region can be said to have parted the Red Sea reallowing oil tankers to pass and prices to stabilize.

Well, I am surprised by the reaction of the price of gold and the stock market to the Egyptian problems. Gold is still in the trading band, not broken out high or low, even with the unrest, The USD index is very low, and would generally push gold up, but the Asian and euro countries aren't too anxious to buy PM either. The stock market seems contrary also. My copper holdings are going great guns, hope it hangs on for a little while longer so I can exit happily.

I don't necessarily endorse the opinion in this article, but it is interesting that the dollar/gold relationship hasn't been reacting normally.

Could be the "smart" money is buying crude ? Cannot imagine the scenerio of control of the Suez canal going to Muslim radical extremeists
