On Monday 1/10, a poster on CU (page 237) reported a call he had with someone at the Mint named Michael White who said:

  3. A phone call to the US Mint that was lost right before any new info could be obtained? The info from the call was not new on 1/10/11; it has been available since 12/1/10:

There is definitely a frenzy over these 5 ounce issues! Hopefully people don't buy too much into the hype (no pun intended). :smile TC

Yep, hype is certainly spread on thick all over various forums interested in this new coin issue... the vast majority of related posts have become negative and/or sarcastic due to the poor handling of this coin release. I don't expect it to be diminished with the release of the numismatic version and will likely dominate US modern coin news all year long.

IT's a little late to be concerned about buying into the hype . The real frenzy will begin when they start selling them off trying to get back what they paid for them.

Hype and a selling frenzy are not the same thing. The hype I was speaking about is on-going and disinformation is mounting. It continues to thicken and spread, confused by and confusing others who are mostly without reliable information nor ability to get coins-in-hand. It will continue to thicken and spread with each APs handling and release of the bullion coins. Criticism of the Mint can almost be guaranteed, as the mark-up for the numismatic versions and even more limited supply, is bound to surpass the price and demand that the APs are currently being restricted to for selling the bullion pieces to the public. The negativity surrounding this coin release from the collecting community will continue and many will continue to base their comments on misinformation, if not merely feeling left out.

This is not about sellers frantically trying to unload these coins or your opinion that the market for these coins will quickly tank. It's far too soon to suggest they will, especially since most people haven't even seen these coins in hand to know how much they want them, what they are worth to the individual and how big and in-demand the collectors of these coins come to define the longer term market for them.

Be cool we dont want the mint to stop manufacturing variety's and new release's now do we ?. Variety's are a big part of whats keeping new and veteran collectors alike in this hobby !

There's not much chance of anyone getting the Mint to cool their jets and stop cranking out all their modern dreck.

I look at it this way, I like this stuff coming out...it gives me or anyone else the opportunity to buy low and sell high to the next one down the line wanting to buy these or any other items the mint releases...

course if you do that you gotta do it quick have it sold within the 1st day of the release or the price starts to drop off on certain things...

and no I don't see it as price goughing or ripping anyone off... if people want to pay $3,000 for a set of coins someone else paid $800 for... by all means it's there money to throw away... as a fool and their money are soon parted...
