I recently cleaned my change jar out (it had been a few months) and i came up with 21 dollars and that will be added to my 30 i planned to use to buy some coinage at the bank. I am wondering what kinds of coins contain silver that i may run across and want to hang on to.
    Thanks,
    Devil

About the only denomination that you can search with a reasonable chance of finding silver is half dollars.

Pre-1965 (that is 1964 and earlier) dimes, quarters and half dollars are 90% silver. 1965-1970 half dollars are 40% silver. War Nickels (some 1942 and all 1943-1945) are 35% silver.

I have had luck with searching boxes of halves and dimes. One day at a dollar store I got a 1959 quarter in change, and that is the only silver that I got while NOT searching boxes, and the only silver quarter I have found. Check out the roll searchers thread here: http://www.cointalk.com/t10176/

Also to give you an idea this past week I went through about $300 in quarter rolls and didn't find a single one. Half dollars are the way to go

So halves are the way to go, i'll probably get a bunch of those then. I love nickels though so i will probably get a bunch of those too

i've had better luck with dimes (about 20 found) than halves (only 1 40% found, no 90%), so i guess it's luck/area you live in/bank you use.

ok well im not busy much this week so im just going to hit the banks for all they got. I can usally knock off 100-500 coins a day when im not busy so i think i'll try either nickels or halves tommorow im feeling a vibe

Happy hunting! I saw a good tip on here to hit up the teller trays for halves. I've got some time off as well and it sounds like we'll be doing the same thing

Yeah, but you don't count. Treasure swirls around you like bees round a honeypot, and all you need do is reach out and pick it up. :p

Not sure about the odds in rolls, but it seems in circulation I find more silver dimes than anything else. I don't think the general public even thinks to look at them so they slip through and stay in circulation a lot more so than quarters. I've probably found a few dozen this year just in change from stores.

FYI, I found a bank with them and bought $180 in halves and found zip. At one bank I spent $6.50 and bought all the halves the tellers had in their trays and found a 1965 40%. Good luck!

I work at a gas station and in the last couple days I've found a 1943 nickel and a 1962 dime on top of the few dollars worth of quarters I've bought from the till since I started there.

Good luck, but don't get disappointed if it proves difficult. I searched an entire box of dimes $250 and another $120 in quarters last week and found nothing. But All last year I found only one silver dime. I completed a nice circulated set of Roosevelts though. I searched a few thousand dollars worth of coins this year.

    Again, good luck.
