Many orders were taken and many sold out their quotas very quickly but the Mint forced dealers not to price gouge and so haven't received the coins nor been allowed to deliver on any orders. They effectively haven't even been made available for sale yet. Here is the 12/10 status update from the Provident Metals Blog.
According to Coin News Update... Bad News...only 75,000 coins (15,000 sets) have been ordered by the participating APs. Good News...the remaining coins will be made available to the participating APs (at some point) if they desire. Hmmm...what happens if the APs don't order all the coins?
Yup, I've been watching with detached amusement - or should that be bemusement? 15,000 sets sold suggests that only 5 of the 11 APs have ordered their full allocation. Unfortunately the Coin News Update figures are from Tuesday and the APs had until 3pm today to submit their orders, so it's still all up in the air. I hope the APs that have ordered their full allocation are prepared for the onslaught that will hit their websites and phone lines the moment they put them on sale!
I would have to read through the legistation again but I believe once the AP have had their chance to purchase by XXX date then the coins would also be made available to the state parks so that they can resell them... please correct me if I am wrong but it is a possability.
That is correct. Also, any coin that isnt sold my midnight 31DEC2010 will be destroyed according to the law. (The mint is not allowed to sell coins in the wrong year)
Really? I thought they planned on selling the 27,000 sets of the "collector" versions of these exact same coins in Q1 2011 right on the Mint website?
How can they sell the quarter proof sets from 2009 til December this year then? I have no clue, just asking. I even bought the silver proof quarter set from 2009 from their site about two months ago.
This is incorrect. The 2010 versions will be sold next year on the mint's website. 2009 pieces have been on sale most of this year for various series.
Maybe it's the difference between collector coins i.e. the proof sets, individual proofs, collector versions of the ATB 5oz etc and bullion coins which these ATB 5oz coins are supposed to be?
As a coin collector you should know that Lincoln's home in Springfield is among the National Parks - National Historic Site in Illinois. National Park Service - Illinois
Might be nice with an Early Release Label! http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?NewsletterNewsArticleID=1018
I thought they couldn't MAKE coins after the new year...didn't think they had a problem SELLING in the new year. Since you could still get 2009 quarter proofs on the site up until about 2 weeks ago...
" Bullion coins minted under paragraph (1)-- ‘(A) shall become available for sale no sooner than the first day of the calendar year in which the circulating quarter dollar of which such bullion coin is a duplicate is issued; and ‘(B) may only be available for sale during the year in which such circulating quarter dollar is issued." http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-6184
The update I got this morning from APMEX. Dear Customer, You are receiving this email because you ordered one or more of the America The Beautiful five coin sets after the initial launch by the U.S. Mint of the program on December 1, 2010, and before the U.S. Mint amended the details of the program on December 6, 2010. As you almost certainly know, the U.S. Mint re-launched the program on December 9, 2010, but, only with some substantial changes that neither you nor we expected. Most importantly, the U.S. Mint imposed a prohibition on the sale of more than one set to a customer in a single household. In addition, they set a maximum price of $859.95 for these sets. That change was obviously beyond our control and we have adjusted our orders accordingly. We have revised your order to meet the U.S. Mint’s mandate. You will be charged for the one set as shown below in accordance with the amended details the U.S. Mint has set forth regarding the sale of the sets. This price is lower than the price at which you ordered. Order ID xxxxxxxx Quantity Allowed: 1 Sales Price: 859.95 Shipping Cost: 45.75 Coupon: 0 Order Total: 905.70 Amount Received: 1461.80 Refund: 556.10 This amount has been refunded to your credit card. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter and, as always, value our relationship with you. If you have any questions in regard to this matter, please contact me directly.
