how did you aquire them, i went through a ton of threads but couldn't find an answer. im thinkin of getting some copper and was wonderin if getting bank rolls are any good or should i just pay for them. i saw 68 pounds for $195 shipped, claims to be $100 face value. $2.87/lb or .0195 per coin.
If you have spare time I would say buy boxes of pennies from the bank and sort them. I do that for fun and I have almost 175 dollars in pres already. I also have found hundreds of wheat pennies most common dates but still exciting to find. So in my opinion no I would not pay 195 dollars for 100 dollars in pennies
I just pull them from circulation. If I see a penny on the ground I pick it up. I sometimes find old pennies when I go metal detecting with my son.
so if i go to the bank and buy a box what kind of copper ratio will i find, im just trying to feel my way around right now before i delve in.
If copper is your only goal, you can go down to the hardware store and buy a spool of bare 6 AWG copper wire. On the pennies, if you do this in big quantities, they do sell machines that will sort copper pennies from the zinc ones.
That is a better deal than I have ever taken when purchasing bulk. I sort by rolls, and just old fashion pocket change as a past time. I was not making enough progress, so I started buying by the bag. My best deal on memorial Lincoln cents has been just over .02 each with shipping. The average cost for my Wheats have been between .05 and .06 cents (shipping included when I bought 3 bags). Sounds like you have a pretty good thing here to work from. Spot copper was much less when I picked up my last few bags. I also have a little scrap copper (copper shot) by the pound. The cents were less expensive and frankly are very pleasing to sort through.
Buying them off ebay and using a machine takes the fun out of it. I work at a call center (though I look weird) I go through rolls at work. And If I have a find of the day I show my coin collecting buddy's at work Do whatever makes you comfortable, always do the "Drop test" on 1982 pennies to be certain, you will hear that lovely ring as opposed to that flat drop sound. I can remember an instance where I bought $50 in pennies from the bank and unbelievably a roll searcher deposited all of those rolls not to long before I picked them up, I could tell because they were all in the same exact cheap dollar store penny rolls and they all had nothing but 1982 for the copper pennies. I think out of the entire $50 face I found one roll in copper 1982 pennies because that searcher either was too lazy or took pre 1982 to heart. Other times you might get lucky, like the day I dread when my wife made me deposite an entire back of <=1982 pennies ($10 Face) because we needed meat for spaghetti for dinner that night. I sadly got paid the next day.
at 2.5+ cents per cent it is probably worth it now. how many coppers were made p-d-s in 1982? I see the print run published for the year, but it includes copper and zinc combined.
so yesterday i picked up my first box, popped some rolls open and started to sort. i went through maybee 10 rolls and i started thinking that maybee this isn't for me. this morning i woke up with not much on the agenda so i started sorting again, i got into a bit of a rythm and before i knew it i was done with the box. it really wasnt too bad and after further review i may actually be getting addicted to it. this first box yielded 500 coppers, 6 wheaties and 2 dimes, is this a decent haul?. i have my second box here waiting to begin on now
I sometimes buy 20$ boxes of cents from my work, recently there have been too many brand newish cents in them for me to even want to go through them. For example one box I have now has nearly 50% ratio of 2010 cents, every roll I open I get disgusted seeing all these shiny new shield cents, sure I save a few choice ones, but most of them all seem spotty or splattered with some kind of product. My best luck is going through hand rolled cents purchased at face at my local credit union, up to 80% coppers, and I even scored a few rolls of AU BU wheaties that were turned into my bank at face.
Sounds good to me. I have never located any dimes in cent rolls. I think you did darn good. Do you re-roll the cents?
i dont know, havnt thought about how im gonna turn them in yet. does anyone have any idea's, coinstar?
I coinstar if I had a good bulk ratio of copper because the profit from the copper coins outweighs the 9.8% fee for coinstar but If I open a roll and it has greater than 50-60% Zinc Clad coins I re-roll the non-coppers mark them with a Permanent marker "No-CU" and return the to my bank and tell my teller "please don't give me these rolls back at a later time"
I just bring the non copper pennies to my local bank which has a coin machine that counts them for free. I am not really a cheap person but why should I pay to cash my money in if I can cash it in for free?
My bank only has a fee of 6% for the coin machine if it is commercial use or non customer use. I go to this bank about once a week to use the coin machine and haven't had a problem yet. I have a few other banks that have coin machines that are free but they are at least ten miles away.
That's what I am saying Can we say a bank name please. I have been to BBVA and Chase nothing of the sort.
