Actually it's not that much. I've been a designer of this equipment and gold is only used if there is absolutely no other way to meet the design specs and even then it's applied in amounts where they are counting the thickness by numbers of gold atoms over a given area. It's such a small amount of gold that even with current prices, it's only cost effective to recover it in very large recycling operations.

Right, and in that thread I linked to above, Cloud mentioned:

You said that in response to someone's post about a home lab. A home lab setup, even an extensive one probably has no measurable gold in it. The reference that you site would be machinery such as an IBM mainframe where using gold contacts isn't as much an issue in a million dollar machine.

I replied to fools_gold with reassurance that his electronics likely do have some quantity of PMs in them, which may be recoverable when recycled. You are assuming that whatever equipment he has had none, "probably has no measurable gold in it." I never said anything implying it was a bounty his equipment might contain. I quoted the other thread to support your previous post that it's very difficult, unless in massive quantities like that industry might best take advantage of, to cull enough PMs to make it worth an individuals time believing they can gain from gathering equipment to recycle. One's home lab indeed does have measurable quantities, as you said, "counting the thickness by numbers of gold atoms over a given area." Even that is measurable.

My lab consists of networking equipment. Cisco switches, routers, firewalls and other vendors. Just a handful of servers but most of it are networking devices. So I'm not sure if these have more or less PM's than PC parts....

My mention of this was only meant as a mild reassurance for putting your money in other necessities at this time, not meant to be splitting hairs over vapor applied gold atoms as if that was some sort of PM play for an individual expending the effort to collect, save and eventually recycle for a few bucks worth of gold scrap. :smile

To be honest with you, the more I think about it, I'm probably better off reselling anything I don't need. Whatever I get is probably more cost effective than to refine and get a drop of gold or silver.

I knew you only meant to throw it out there and not to start a debate. =)

I agree with the resale idea, then use that money toward savings for investments or more equipment. :thumb:

Yikes! Just got my 1/4 ounce AGE proof in today. I have 7 days to decide if I am gona have to return it because of a 'big' drop in pm's this next week. Yikes! (oh, yes it is a beautiful coin.)

Amen. I stopped buying altogether in the Spring of this year and moved a decent chunk into land. Sold out of PM at a high compared to my original investment and bought into some land at a ridiculous low As soon as gold retreats back to reasonable values (sub $800), I will resume the stockpile and refill the coffers.

This ****ty economy has been an opportunist's paradise.

Money can be made in even the worse economy....so good for you. I wouldn't be hurt too bad if gold dropped to $800. I don't see that happening for a long time though. Depending on what happens. Too many variables to quantify....

I am enjoying this dip...I wonder how far it will go before the close....

Most of the dip seems to be a dumping by JPMorgan. If the economy was improving, one would be tempted to expect a deep retreat. If it is just a couple of brorker/banks needing to adjust SLV shares, it will most likely go back to previous. Next week may be even worse as the Nov options expire a week from now, and any large holders will try to manipulate the price corresponding to their options. IMO. I do not think any fundamentals have improved, but board members must remember when asked by newbies to buy or sell at any particular point, the pain of those who bought near the peak. I am sure their enthusiasm has decreased some.

    Again IMO.

When gold peaked around $1420-1423....I was so eager to pick some before missing the boat....but as I've mentioned before, I wasn't at ease with the quick rise in price.

Now I'm glad I waited. If gold can be had for around $1330-1350 I'd say that's a pretty good deal.....

Like you said, next week would be better to wait and see how bad it gets...

I'd love to see silver drop down to $18-20/oz again so I can buy alot more then I am able to buy right now...I have been buying but since the spike I have slowed down the amount I've bought feeling this is just a common spike from the "quanitive easing" news that came out... I just wonder how far down this mountain goes... down baby down! :D
