There's a long thread discussing where to hide a stack at home on the Kitco forum. Be aware, that place is a bad neighborhood full of people who should never, never in a million years, have let their prescriptions run out.

My wife has lots of birdhouses in all the trees, I like to hide it in them, and of course in the dog house, the dog dont mind. I also like to carry a few ounces on me at all times, that way if for some reason I am away from my stashes I am covered. Also under the lawnmower in the garage in winter, under the snow blower in summer, I use a couple old junk gold dollars in my penny loafers, nah, I am funning you, I use a safe deposit box, gold can be a temptation for young ones that dont know any better, and there in the safe deposit box it is out of the way.

One of the best things for a melt down scenario is to have lots of friends and to be considered a trustworthy competent individual.

I had my coins drawn into thin wire and woven into my undershorts.

I hate to repeat myself, but did we not just have this conversation? (See CoinTalk thread here.) SituationalAwareness.JPG

the best place to hide your stash is......

    somewhere you don't tell strangers!

LOL!!!! The Kitco forum cracks me up....."The train is leaving the station" or "It's a conspericy by JPM, AMPEX, etc....", "It's a real SHTF senario" EEK!!!!!

What a paranoid group! It makes you feel like swimming with the sharks though, beware!!!!

well if i had any i sure would not tell where it was.
do you really think it will all come down to gold?
i have a 9mm w/extra ammo, shotgun w/boxes of ammo, and a 308 rifle for game if it gets that bad.
army navy stores have ammo boxes for ammo storage and pretty cheap to.
i like some others here would want to eat and protect myself perhaps a few gold coins may be of help.

I swallow my gold before I go to bed each night. Next morning I, um, "recover" it. Then I carry it with me each day, inside a bicycle inner tube wrapped around my waist.

My favorite idea from the Kitco forum was to buy a sewer line cleanout fitting and plug, and install the fitting someplace plausible that isn't actually part of the house plumbing so that it looks like it's going into a wall and a floor. Just unscrew the plug to get at it.

That said, gold at home can be a liability during a social breakdown. Absent a breakdown, you're caught between the Scylla of risking trust in other people to know where it is, and the Charybdis of nobody knowing where it is if you die or get Alzheimers.

I'd respectfully advise the original poster to find out what has worked for people in hyperinflations and cataclysms, and to reconsider the risk/benefit relationship of home storage.

A floor safe is like fortress, a fixed target and will be breached by unscrupulous criminals should they find the location. I recommend stealth and keep it away from my home to protect my loved ones.

I like the PVC idea... perhaps sealed and filled with lead shot in the bottom of your sump pump hole since its usually covered up anyhow??? I can't afford gold so these are just random ideas.

Buy a piece of land "away from town" in a rural area. Scope it out for a while, so that the people who do live in the area or even a few miles away, all get used to at least seeing you occasionally, so that you're not a stranger. Make it a retreat of sorts, or a huntcamp, or come up with a good excuse for the property and the reason you want to be out there occasionally. When you are confident with the area, look online for a company that will come in and install an underground storage type thing. There "used to be" a company out west (Utah maybe..) that would come in at an "off" time, get in, get the job done, get out, and hopefully none of your neighbors were around to see what they were doing. Voila' AND, if you can keep your OWN mouth shut, no one will ever know. THE BIGGEST problem, is if you ever tell anyone about your gold, rest ASSURED, they will tell someone. People love to tell gossipy things.. and what is more gossipy than the nut job that has gold buried/hidden somewhere? Safe deposit boxes are a good thing, as is a heavy safe, a 9mm HK, and take defensive handgunning classes up for a hobby. And, remember it's never worth your life.

well, it sounds to me the BIGGER problem is the "company" that you assume would "get out".

Not true at all. What do you think you do, stand there and show them what you're planning to put away? But saying you don't trust that part, do it yourself. Spend some time doing your own research; look at those companies (I only know of one myself) and see what they do. Gosh, there are oodles of books about this kind of 'strategy'. Even emergency preparedness organizations have helpful info. Pretty simple, but takes lots of time to really 'study up'. And as previous posters have mentioned, there are other things to be thinking about than just 'how to hide my gold'. It never hurts to have a plan.
