I'm confused. I see ebay sellers claiming they have a 1/2 Silver round which totals 8oz. But if silver is based on Troy oz wouldn't it be 6 Troy oz? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm trying to add this up x Spot but do I use 6 or 8? As of Friday 15th = Silver $24.42 x 6= $146.52 Silver $24.42 x 8 = $195.36 Just trying to add this up....
Try this out, just plug in the factors: fineness, weight, metal type: Dendritics.com/scales/metal-calculator And this explains troy oz weight differences
So, it's 6 Troy oz. and the sellers on ebay are using 8. That's $195.56 a $48.84 profit which is there start price and there's bids. WOW!
I personally think the best and most secure form of bullion is government issued rounds: ASEs, Maples, Libertads, Pandas, Philharmonics, etc. Certain bars pamp suisse, Engelhard, JM, Kitco, Apmex are probably fine as well. It the very nature of these sellers duping those uninformed or not cautious in buying who are going to experience trouble reselling later with the misunderstanding of what they have bought into from sellers misrepresenting the product in the first place.
The half pound silver rounds can be either 6 or 8 troy ounces. The one's that are 6 are usually marked one half troy pound.
Your correct. My question was not if a Troy oz is 6 or 8, but, ebay listings are saying 8oz not 8 Troy ounce. .. Eitherway, 1/2 of any metal is 6 Troy Oz. So when you calculate the cost of silver you take the cost of Spot and the unit and there you go...Total. The misinformed are starting there bid and stating what they have 8 oz hinse avoirdupois ounces. If you weighed this out after receiving it your short on silver. ONE TROY POUND IS TWELVE TROY OUNCES, SO 1/2 TROY POUND IS 6 TROY OZ. THE AVOIRDUPOIS OUNCE (regular US postal oz) WEIGHS 28.3 GRAMS WHILE A TROY OUNCE WEIGHS 31.1 GRAMS MAKING THE TROY OUNCE OVER 10 PERCENT HEAVIER There are 12 troy ounces per troy pound, rather than 16 avoirdupois ounces in the avoirdupois pound.
This is common practice by a whole lot of ebay sellers. A couple may actually not know of the term "troy ounce", but most seller aren't that foolish. They carefully word the product description as to not technically lie, and wait for some uninformed bidders... and ebay is the place to find em!!! I've seen so many selling 90% silver in this manner. I just want to know what the face value is when making a purchase of that kind... or let someone else do the math and support this seller.
I've bought many of these on eBay. Mine were 8 troy ounces. Troy pounds are rarely used. The ones I had were marked "HALF POUND FINE SILVER" and that makes it confusing but most of refiners who make these are not trying to rip people off. The eBay sellers are simply selling what they have.
I have one as well that states 1/2 pounnd .999 Fine Silver. That to me means 6 Troy Oz. I have yet to weigh it for it should weigh 186.6 grams. If it is truely 8 oz (per misinformed seller) and I'm using silver Troy oz. It should weigh 248.8 grams.
Yes, it should weigh 248.8g. 8 troy ounces. The ones (very few) that were made in troy pounds will (usually) be noted in the hallmark, as in ONE HALF TROY POUND.
Ex. Read item specs. http://cgi.ebay.com/1995-1-2lb-Silver-American-Eagle-Bullion-Proof-Round-/190456750034?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c581b5fd2
So a troy ounce weighs more than a normal ounce, but a troy pound weighs less than a normal pound. I knew the former, but not the latter
You know I'm just going to buy a scale and weigh this out myself. I only have a 50g but times like this I need to upgrade. geesh! My point is SILVER IS 31.1 Troy oz. If you say 8oz then your offering 31.1 x 8= 248.8 grams of silver and it better be all there. Right?
Uni.tes Grams/gains/ oz~es and scruples. Please keep this thread alive. We may move on to mass understanding.
That could be a half troy pound but the seller is likely mistaken. All the one's I've owned were like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1996-GIANT-HALF...60?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4cf2849f88 In the first eBay link the round is listed as 8ozs but the seller contradicts that in the description.
Well the proof is in the pudding. I ordered my scale last week as stated and it arrived today. Per my question. Is 1/2 pound 6 or 8 oz? The answer is 6 as it should be. I weighed it in ozt Troy Ounce, Oz and grams. You be the judge....
We see these suckers all of the time. Most of them are 6 troy ounces but I'd guess they about 15%-20% of the ones we see are 8 troy ounces. We buy several hundred of these a year. You also have to be careful... there are some out there that say things like "1/2 Lb Proof" but nothing about being silver. They look the same but are copper heavy plated with silver. So make sure yours say ".999 Silver" or "Fine silver" on them before buying them because if they don't I'd bet they are copper.
