$11 each for 1941 and 1958 Canadian halves $9.77 for a 1963 5 franc $4.25 for a 1948 Canadian quarter Face value or less for everything else
Ya left off the best parts! The story goes that in 1913, the US Mint had already prepared die's for the Liberty nickels but before they went into production mode, Legislation had been passed to change the design to the Buffalo Nickel. One enterprising soul took a pair of die's and fired up the presses after hours cranking out at least 5 of the coins. He then offered them up for sale after about 6 or 7 years and the rest is history. Why these nickels have not been confiscated by the US Government is beyond my reasoning since, technically, they are illegal coins that were produced illegally and then stolen from the US Mint. Sure, it was only 25 cents but then the 1974 Aluminum Cent is only 1 cent and the Government has issued statements to the fact that any that are found are subject to confiscation. It's a wacky gov't with some fairly wacky priorities regarding "illegal coinage".
A few years back, Whitman published a book entitled 100 GREATEST US COINS. The 1913 Liberty Nickel is ranked #1 In fact there is an entire book written solely about the 1913 Liberty Nickels entitled MILLION DOLLAR NICKELS. BTW, I feel the need to thank you. I have a poker chip set and I have been missing a $1 chip for the last 5 years. I just opened my copy of MILLION DOLLAR NICKELS and the lost chip fell out onto the floor. I must have been using it as a book mark.
It is a coin collecting investment strategy where you limit yourself to 20 coins which fit in one TPG Box. Collecting-Investing: A Box of Twenty – The Idea Kinda like mutual fund for investing in rare coins.
Here's a nice history of it. http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=9067
Both of those are great books! I own a copy of the top and read the bottom (local library had it). If anyone is interested in the '13 V nickels, that book is a must read!
This one was a little over $10k... at about that point I decided not to upgrade the rest of my 1909 gold to mint state examples... just way too much money even though the gold looks much nicer than my AU examples
My last coins I bought were two mercury dimes and 3 silver roosevelts. I got lucky and found in rollls so they cost 10 cents a piece.
Hmm, probably $1800 but those were 1995 dollars. I went nuts in 1995 buying a $1800, $700, and $500 coin. They are probably worth about $7800, $4000, $3000 today.
Why keep it anywhere but a bank vault? Maybe he's teasing us with repro. I believe Royal Oak makes 1913 Lib nickel reproductions.
