    Another thing...

you know Liberty is on all of our (USA) early coinage:

Half Cents, Large Cents, Indian Head Cents, Nickel Three-cent pieces, V Nickels, Half Dimes, Bust Dimes, Liberty Seated Dimes, Barber Head Dimes, Mercury Dimes, 20 Cent pieces, Bust Quarters, Liberty Seated Quarters, Barber Head Quarters, Standing Liberty Quarters, Bust Half Dollars, Liberty Seated Half Dollars, Barber Head Half Dollars, Liberty Walking Half Dollars, Bust Dollars, Liberty Seated Dollars, Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Presidential Dollars, Liberty Head Gold Dollars, Bust Gold Quarter Eagles, Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagles, Four Dollar Gold Stellas, Bust Gold Half Eagles, Liberty Head Gold Half Eagles, Bust Gold Eagles, Liberty Head Gold Eagles, Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles and Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagles, as well as, these commemoratives:

    State Quarters

Goddesses, other than Liberty, graced some of America's commemorative coins:

    coinpage.com photos

Goddess Columbia on 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition Half Dollar:

But Liberty prevailed as evidenced by the following commemoratives:

All Silver, Gold and Platinum Eagles
MMIX (2009) Ultra High Relief Gold Coins

Before the new United States of America struck its first coins (1792) a pattern coin bearing the image of Liberty as Goddess was struck for post-colonial Massachusettes. The Red book has text and a photo of the original coin (third one shown under MASSACHUSETTES. I couldn't find a photo on the web, of an original coin, and settled for a photoof a replica on coinreplicas.com website. Before you see the photo, read the following excerpt from coinsofourpast.com.

Note - The heading to this webpage erronously states

    Massachusetts Halfpenny "Janus Copper" 1787

    The Date should read 1776.

    Here's that excerpt:

"This coin dated 1776 is often referred to as the Janus Copper or Janus Half- Penny. On the obverse it shows a 3-sided head with faces looking forward, left, & right. The mythological god Janus had only 2 faces, looking right & left (the month of January is named for him; one face looks to the old year, one to the new.) This is a unique pattern piece. The only known specimen sold for $40,000 in 1979."

America has always referred to her as Miss Liberty or Lady Liberty. This coin clearly addresses her as
    GODDESS LIBERTY on its reverse.

There is evidence that the great minuteman patriot, Paul Revere, prepared the die used in producing the 1776 Janus Head Half Cent. Some numismatic scholars believe he was the one who struck it.

There is some thought about the reason none were struck for circulation:

    1. Religious disaproval
    A. Janus on obverse
    B. The word GODDESS on reverse.

Hope you enjoyed meeting all these Goddesses...

    Thanks for posting this, Clinker!

Your last link for the 1935 Normandie is somewhat of a perplexity for me. I love the allegorical design on the reverse, and when I saw this medal for the first time about 7 years ago, I place a bid of $250 in the eBay auction. I dropped my jaw when the final bid posted at $544. I put it on my Watch List and through 2006, two other specimens surfaced which also sold for $500+. I finally deleted it from my list about 2009 when no others had surfaced. Then, about 3 months ago, another surfaced with a BIN of $325 and I had to pass on it because of finances. Now, I see this listing which sold for $109 in March of this year. Amazing! I guess it's a good thing I passed on the other. It never sold, but if it comes up again, I'll use this auction to try to negotiate a lower price.

I can't get a clear description of the 20 Drachma Greek modern coins. One source says it "Selena the moon goddess on horse" the other says it is a "Nymph on horseback". Any help? I'm attaching two pictures. The designs are similar except for the "20 DRX" on the 1965 proof and the date on the 1973 BU coin.
