I was hoping to get a little more detailed information about this gold coin. medoraman was a huge help to identify the coin and point me in the right direction. This is what I came up with based on Chris's information. composition: gold weight:4.03 grams size: approx 25-28mm 1221 - 1254 gold hyperpyron coin of John III Doukas Vatatzes In all the examples I have found, none of them have this "Star" (see image). They either have a dot, multiple dots, or no dot. Chris mentioned it could be a control symbol used by the mint. Does anyone have insight or the ability to tell me anything more about this coin? More specifically the star? Thank you for any information. -greg
The star in this case is what is known as a "siglon," an internal mint control symbol. Numismatists have not yet deciphered the specific purpose or arrangement of these symbols. Here is a similar specimen with a star: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=207310
