Antoninus is my favorite emperor and I recently had three aurei of him at the same time but felt I was showing my bias so I sold off my lesser two, leaving this:
ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XIIII, laureate head right; reverse COS IIII, Fortuna standing left holding rudder and cornucopia. I have the same type Pius as you Randy but slightly different on the reverse legend. But Definitely not the same quality. It is another one of my favourites even though it isn't the most detailed. It was also my first denarius! This is one of those coins I feel like I 'stole' at $12
Here are three of my Pius babies ... Sestertius (Salus with rudder) Sestertius (Tiber beside ship) Drachm (Nilus with genius emerging from cornucopea, croc below) ... man, these coins are kinda like warm, cozy slippers
Antoninus Pius Denarius Obv: IMP T AEL CAES HADR ANTONINVS, bare head right Rev: AVG PIVS P M TR P COS II P P, Modius with corn ears. Minted in Rome. A.D. 139 Reference:– BMC 79 (4 corn ears and poppy, L. A. Lawrence). RIC III 40 (corn ears and poppy). RSC 103. This coin doesn't show the poppy as per the BMC/RIC examples
He was a handsome guy. This link depicts a sculpted bust of Antoninus Pius located in Munich: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Antoninus_Pius_Glyptothek_Munich_337_cropped.jpg I have no coins depicting Antoninus Pius. I recently posted my new coin depicting his wife (Faustina the elder). They apparently made a handsome couple.
Here's one that no one else will have: ROME. Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. PB Tessera (22mm, 5.09 g, 11 h) The Lighthouse of Portus ANT Rostowzew 64, fig. 2; Kircheriano 66 The Lighthouse of Portus was restored during the reign of Antoninus Pius. This tessera was likely distributed during the ceremony.
Two published, one in a museum in Rome and the other from the Trau collection, now in a private collection. And then mine, which appears to be an unlisted specimen, but should come from an old collection in Munich. The dealer I got it from said it *may* have been deaccessioned from the Staatliche Münzsammlung in Munich, but I find that hard to believe.
Man, that must certainly be one of the benefits of working at the ol' coin-shop, eh?!! => it's a bit like going to a garage sale on Friday night, rather than Saturday morning with the rest of the hoard!! that's a fantastic pick-up!! *rats* ... all I get at my job is a few cool ore samples!!
