I have noticed while looking at the reverse of most Indian head cents that the shield at the top seems to be either close to the denticles or far away. Im sure there's a good answer?

    Example.....

    Shield close to denticles....

    Shield far away from denticles......

I'm sure you can appreciate how much technology has advanced since those days, but in spite of it, we still see just as many positioning variations today as there were then. When the Mint is pumping out billions of coins, it can't help but happen.

What it boils down to is different hubs used to make the dies. And like Chris said, they aint all exactly alike.
