Hello Fellow CoinTalkers, I just purchased an Eisenhower dollar Dansco complete with all proof issues. The dealer informed me that it was purchased from a collector that had assembled it over some time. Thanks for letting me share it here.
Some conscientious collector had taken some time to fill the book with nice looking examples & now I get to benefit from all his/her work. :smile It is doubly nice because I don’t need to break-up any of my mint & proof sets to assemble the book.
Was it a fair price to pay? There is one coin that I will probably upgrade. The 1977-P is UNC but it is heavily bag marked. Perhaps one of you Ike specialists can let me know what to look for while I’m shopping for a new 1977. All the coins look to be 65 or better and I paid $195. I checked the Greysheet & assume that $195 was a fair price.
For the 1977 P, check daveenders on eBay, he has a lot of Ike's and at reasonable prices. He cuts up mint sets, so you will be less likely to get a bag marked coin.
Mint Set Coins were in fact stored and shipped in bags to the packagers so your statement is only partially true. Mint Sets are no guarantee that you'll get "bag mark free" coins. Folks need to remember that for the Philadelphia IKE's, a lot of what is perceived as "bag marks" is actually annealing marks left over from weaker strikes that what was used at the Denver Facility. The good thing about davenders is that each coin he sells offers a fairly nice enlargement to insure that you get what you want. and I've never been disapointed with any of my davenders purchases.
I know that they were stored in bags, hence the reason for the 'less likely to receive one without bag marks.'
Not bad. A couple of dealers near me have the same set for $229: 16 - Copper Nickel Uncirculated Coins 6 - Proof Copper Nickel Coins 5 - 40% Silver Uncirculated Coins 5 - Proof 40% Silver Coins
Great buy! Congratulations! Check the 1972-P to see which type it is. In fact, any of the 1972-P coins, all 3 types, are worth a premium in nice condition. I noticed you have some extra holes at the end of the album. Maybe you can get the 1972-P types, especially the type 2, and put them there. The 1972-P in type 2 is worth a premium in any grade and would be a nice addition to your collection. Once again, nice! Have fun with collecting these. High quality, high grade Ikes are hard to come by and are underpriced, IMHO.
Tissue paper allows you to see which coins contain silver The silver coins are easy to detect if you view the pages through a piece of tissue paper. The technique has been described here at CT several times. The silver alloy coins appear much brighter when viewed through the tissue paper than do the clad (non-silver) coins. Check out these photos depicting the pages as seen through tissue. :smile You can easily determine which coins are silver.
