Having been on the wagon for a couple of weeks I have seriously lost all concept of what the wagon looked like let alone being on it...... Starting with an ugly Sept. Sev. but a reverse type that has been missing from my Emesa collection. Septimius Severus denarius Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, laureate head right Rev:– MI-NE-R VICT, Minerva standing left, holding Victory in right hand, spear in left, shield at feet. Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 - 195 Reference:– BMCRE 379A. RIC 409A (S). RSC 327d. And a couple of more presentable examples... Septimius Severus denarius Obv:– L SEPT SEV PER-T AVG IMP VIII, laureate head right Rev:– FORT R-E-DVC, Fortuna (Hilaritas) standing front, head left, holding long palm and cornucopiae Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 196 Reference:– BMCRE 443a. RIC IV 479A (b) (R2) Septimius Severus denarius Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, laureate head right Rev:– MART VICT, Mars advancing right carrying spear and trophy Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 - 195 Reference(s) – BMCRE -. RIC - (cf. RIC 404, which is IMP CA SEP SEV PER AVG COS II). RSC - .
Add to this a batch of 14 LRB that I have just received and several more coins en-route..... the wagon isn't even a distant memory.... Three wolf and twins... Two from Trier and one from Lugdunum
Super coins, Martin! I also like these Western mint soldiers/standards types. 1. Constantine II Caesar AE3; 2.13g, 18mm, Lugdunum mint. Obv: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C; Laureate, cuirassed bust right. Rev: GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS; Two soldiers, helmeted, standing looking at one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shield resting on ground; between them, two standards, dot in wreath between // PLG Reference: RIC VII Lyon 238 2. Constantine II Caesar AE3; Lugdunum mint. Obv: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C; Laureate, cuirassed bust right. Rev: GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS; Two soldiers, helmeted, standing looking at one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shield resting on ground; between them, two standards, dot in wreath between // SLG Reference: RIC VII Lyon 238 R2 3. Constans Caesar AE3, 17mm, 1,96g; Arles mint: 333-334 Obv.: FL IVL CONSTANS NOB C; Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev.: GLORI-A EXERC-ITVS; Two soldiers, helmeted, standing looking at one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shield resting on ground; between them, two standards, dot in wreath between // SCONST Reference: RIC VII Arles 378 (p. 274) R4 I have quite a few more that need to be imaged and cataloged.
Dang Martin. I am a big fan of all of those late Romans. Those are the quality I hope to track down for myself yet!
very nice mart, especially sweet LRB. I've been hiding from the wagon...it's looking for me. Here it comes...got to go! I was never here.
try theretvrnof4vgvstvs on ebay.com...... he has some nice ones from the same group as Martins at the moment. This entire group passed through my hands a few years ago and they are good coins with sound metal. The patina is genuine too. I have 3000 plus still to sell from these also...
I will save him on ebay. I am unfortunately hampered by funds and potential unemployment looming at the end of the month. The lady who is currently on maternity leave is due back in a couple of weeks but has not given a definitive answer on whether or not she is returning. Essentially my employment is hanging in the balance since no full time positions are coming up. Luckily I have a job lined up for July and should have the money to survive May and June (if I can't find something) but it would be nice to use the money for something else like a vacation and maybe a couple coins.
Wonderful additions, Martin! I should be on the wagon but it keeps alluding me. I have birthdays coming up starting next week
I'm out here on public internet but was glad to get to see Martin's first coin which is an obverse link to my VICTOR SEVER coin: There are very many variations on the Minerva type and none of them are particularly common. One matches Martin's. I believe the one with owl and the one with no shield are most rare. This public link is not doing well with these pictures so I hope you see the photos.
