Hey gang! These 3 coins are in freshly made no problem PCGS holders. Care to guess the grades? First up 1878 $3 Gold Second 1854 Type II Gold Dollar Lastly 1887 $3 Gold
No one like to grade gold? I guess 58, 64, 55 I will admit I cannot tell if that is the strike or wear on those coins.
Interesting grades. I want to say 63, 62 and 64. I do not know a whole lot about gold, but that won't keep me from taking a swag at it.
No idea what PCGS said, but based on the pics I would say - in order, 55, 55, 58. Could I change my mind if I saw the coins in hand ? Maybe.
C'mon Doug, the game is not what is your opinion, if we all did that, none of us would be wrong. The game is what grade did PCGS assign to them
Well that may be THE game. But MY game is to try help others learn how to grade for themselves. Because if they don't, then they will never know if what they are buying has been graded correctly or not
I'm in the AU camp on these but I was at 58,50,53 but they could just as well be 63,60,62 as images don't show rub that well some times and catching luster is hit and miss.
??? Huh, Doug clearly said he has no idea was PCGS said and he was representing his own opinion, which he later explained was to educate folks on grading. There is no disagreement here. Doug is interpreting the "soft spots" as wear, which may or may not be how PCGS views it, we will see.
still playing games at your age grandpa? BTW your grading is no longer market acceptable Standards of PCGS and NGC have been rising year over year but yours have remained the same. When you are ready to call a 62 coin a 64 come back and we will play another round of guess the grade
why not do a complete analysis like old times with circles and everything. by just giving out grades how will most folks learn why pcgs screwed up if they did
In some cases yes, in others no. But if you look closely at all 3 of the coins you will find contact marks galore, light scratches, wear in the fields, etc. In other words, all of the things you find on circulated coins.
Why not ? Because I did it for 15 years, few if any ever listened, so why continue ? Those who are willing to listen and want to learn usually contact me privately to talk about it. And for anyone that shows that much interest, I've got all the time in the world to talk to them, and am more than willing to do so. That's why not
