Ive never seen that type either. I'd be leery of them if I saw them listed on ebay or something.

One thing about Taras is that they had a large number of minor variations on their coins. This is most easily seen on the larger silver horse/dolphin coins. My drachm is similarly owl but quite different in style and not nearly as high grade as LD's.

That's a lovely set of coins. Where's Bing? He's your man for attribution. :)

Those are some real beauties, many of which I would love to own. Do you need help with attributions? If so, I can help in about an hour or so.

I have a rough (very rough) idea on most of them.... but yes feel free to attribute... I'll see how my progress is coming.

A good collector's group. The sestertii are decent, the denarii are in expect mid grades. Probably the most academically interesting thing is the countermark on the Mark Antony denarius.

Oh, and be sure to use this site to ID the Ptolemaic bronze:

I had noticed that. It looks there may be another one under the ship as well.

I find them interesting as well. Unfortunately, unless the countermark can be identified, I believe you will find it might lower the coins value, instead of increasing it.

So Mat, after you get these priced you think you might give CT members a shot at them? :D

I think you will have an easy time IDing most of them. Shame about the bronze Hadrian and the gouges(if I am seeing that right). You probably shouldn't even list it just send it to me.

The Vitellius denarius also looks neat and the Nero. Who am I kidding I would like them all.

I'm back and it looks to me like you have most of them identified. How about letting us know which ones you cannot ID and we can see if we can held. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to seeing all of these and some of the others in the for sale section. I think you shouldn't have much trouble selling them here (and no fees attached).

That one is hard if you are not a specialist. Common obverse and reverse for Roman Republican coins unfortunately. I bet you there were 20 moneyers at least that made a coin that looked like that.

There are actually two distinct marks on the reverse. Above the galley is countermark a series of letters in a square cartouche. Below the galley is a banker's mark - the lettter 'N.' Banker's marks are usually thin letters stamped directly onto the coin and are completely unstudied. Unless a specific banker's hoard were discovered, I doubt any study is even possible.

The countermark, however, reads (IMP) (V[E)S], indicating that the coin was reassessed under Vespasian. This mark was applied at Ephesus, circa AD 74-79.

EDIT: For those who might be unaware, in epigraphy, parentheses indicate that the letters are ligate or otherwise understood. Brackets are for letters that are not visible, but can be determined through comparison.
