Well...TIME TO BUY SOME SILVER AND GOLD!
That was one of the scariest things I've read, and truth be told, it doesn't seem like a far cry of what can happen in the future.

If things came to pass as in depicted in the story, gold and silver wouldn't do much good. What you would need is gas and toilet paper. Sure, the price of gold was high (in the story), but markets were closed.

In my version of the story, the (fictional) meeting our leaders were racing to in Geneva would result in the creation of a world currency. We would be forced, by the new world bank, to repay our 800 billion to China, and whatever we owe other nations, and live on a balanced budget. There would be a surtax on all income and consumption to repay our debts. We wouldn't be able to afford to buy anything from China anymore. We would have to export as much as we import.

Not sure where this would leave gold.

All throughout history gold has been valuable and desirable, I see it no different.
I can easily see in those times, people trading gold and silver instead of the falling paper. They can trade the metal for the toilet paper and gas. Almost like having our own private currency amongst the people who own gold and will accept gold. (And Silver, and Platinum, and any other PM)
Now in prophecy, it says in the very end times, people will be throwing their gold and silver in the streets, as it wont be worth anything... Can't see this happening, but it very well could...Just depends on how the market is going, and what people are trading...(If anything; they might just steal everything they need)

Walmart has to accept cash, if they refuse the government will just nationalize them and fire Sam Walton. Don't think for a minute it can't happen. In the story, the government nationalized the banks. If that really happened, the government would just tell the banks to accept credit cards. Banks don't fail unless the government wants them to. I never understood why the current government allowed some banks to fail, forced some banks to fail, destroyed some banks, then bailed out other banks.

The reference wasn't to WalMart accepting them, rather than the people accepting them amongst themselves. If it ever does get to be that way in the story though, with a little more time, I bet WalMart won't even be in existence, and everything will just be stolen.
    Scary times...

Because the major ones aren't all on a level playing field. They were ok when there was still money left to rob from the public. But once that started drying up, they began to cannibalize against themselves. Had to elminate competition. Some are more important than others. Some have had former prominant employees in the Whitehouse and in other regulatory positions, consistantly, since Bush 1, ensuring they are protected. Others had no protection and now they are gone.

I'm not either. It would be nice to think that people who prepared would have an advantage. But the more I think about it, the more I try to understand how it may realistically play out.

You have to realize that maybe less than 1% of the population could survive in their home for a single month! Less than 1% has enough PMs to survive on, for a long period of time. If any at all! Even if they were worth $5k an ounce, you could risk life and limb going out to try to barter for food or supplies.

The key is, 100% need food, water, shelter, heat in the winter. What will the 99% do to get it? That's the wild card. Will there be some type of order and if so, who will provide it (at great risk) and what will they be paid in for the service? And by whom? Who's going to man the power plants for free so we have electric service?

I'm positive the 1% could deal with themselves in a civil manner. The 99% is what has me worried. I'm afraid '1%' is probably being generous as well. Does anyone think over 3 million people in this country are well prepared for a crisis and could live in their home without going out for a single month? How about 2 months? I would estimate that it would be closer to 2 weeks. Within 2 weeks there would be panic and chaos, unfortunately.

The 'prepared' would have to live in well supplied and able groups to survive the first year and beyond. A much smaller population with no organization would most certainly lead to a takeover by a foreign country. Our resources would not be left to sit here.

At that point, you may as well join them. Unless they were so oppressive you'd rather die fighting them.
