1757 Nomina Magna Sqequor Gold Coin.

Hi,

Does anyone know any information about this coin? Any information is wanted! (e.g value, place of mint, king, anything)...
I think the coin is gold as it is not attracted to a strong magnet and it had passed the bite test so I guess its real gold.
I will get the metal tested soon and will keep the thread updated.

Looks like a Mexico 8 Escudos. Minted in Mexico City, Mint offical MM. mintage unknown, value in XF $6,000. USD Krause # KM 152 Its 91.7% gold , King Ferdinand of Spain, date 1757

The picture of a 1756 Escudo in my Vogt-Bruce Catalog does not look like your coin in two respects; in the catalog, the crown rests directly on the shield (there is no gap), and there is no "wreath" (or whatever) around the coat of arms.

Furthermore, the 1757 specifically has a "short bust" on the obverse, the last year of its type, and yours does not. Could be a spiel-marke coin.

My comment above was based on the OP's indication that it was a 1 escudo; now in the multiple threads he started, there seems to be some doubt whether it's a 1, 2, 4, or 8 escudo?? Really need the coin's diameter, or we're all just spinning our wheels here.

I don't see any indication that it's an 8 escudo; I thought the OP said it was a 1 escudo?? What's the diameter in millimeters?

0.2 cm is about 1/16th of an inch. Try again.

 

Actually its around 0.3cm when I've measured it again...

OK, 3.7 centimeters is approximately the size of an 8 escudo gold coin, and the catalog photo (of a 1758) looks like your coin. That's as far as I can take our investigation.

It's out of print and way out-of-date on prices, but it has great illustrations -- Standard Catalog of Mexican Coins, Paper Money, and Medals, by Dr. George Vogt, Edited by Colin R. Bruce II. Copyright 1978. ISBN 0-87341-016-5.

The "18th Century" (worldwide) Krause Catalog is much better for your purposes; I don't have one, only the 19th and 20th Century editions, because I so rarely run into a coin from the 1700s.
