Hi there, I bought a job lot of old coins at auction comprising of roman, US, english etc coins and there was this unusual South African coin in there with a completely blank rear. It looks to be like a Penny dating from around 1890 but I have done some research online and cannot find any reference as to why it's blank. Is this a minting error? Thanks for any advice in advance, I know next to nothing about coins just find them interesting.
Krause says, In 1900, just prior to the Boer evacuation of Pretoria, blank penny planchets were released into circulation. Reasonably preserved examples have sold for about $50. Yours might be a blank or it might have been mechanically ground down to fool.
