YouTube series for new collectors and young numismatists

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by TheSilverpicker, Feb 16, 2018.

  1. Hi all,

I've been trying to come up with ways for new collectors to have access to numismatic information in ways that they're used to as opposed to the traditional means (i.e. free videos as opposed to expensive reference books). I recently launched the first video in a series that intends to teach new collectors "everything" they need to know about a particular coin in 60 seconds. The first video I did was on the Morgan silver dollar. You can see the video here:

I would love to hear feedback from some veteran collectors on the series idea, the content, and what coins you think I should focus on next. Any feedback would be helpful!

(Also, please note that I am aware that I wrote "George T. Martin" instead of George T. Morgan in one part of the video. Just a dumb mistake).

Anyway, thanks a lot and looking forward to your thoughts!

    -Max

There is no way you can teach other collectors everything they need to know about Morgan silver dollars in 60 seconds.

That is why I call it BoobTube!

    Great video.
I am now an expert on Morgans.
Just got off the phone with PCGS they want me as their head grader.
ANA also called and sent a private jet so I can give a lecture on Morgan Dollars.
    Thank you!!

I realize you put "everything" in quotes, but seriously consider that to say " Learn everything in 60 seconds" points out a lack of depth. Yet the readers come here then thinking they know everything. Like applying to MIT by Knowing everything about string theory and you learned it in 60 secs. Unfortunately many people on yootube believe what they read, and to heck with learning. But it is a starting place perhaps.

I think it's a good start to get someone interested in a series. Maybe throw up some links or guide them towards the numismatic material they will need to learn more about the coin(s) in question.

@TheSilverpicker , I enjoyed your video. Thought it was nicely done. I do agree that stating "Everything you need to know in 60 seconds" is well, just wrong. I really like the idea of creating interest in coins using YouTube. Keep up the good work, but be careful how you phrase things.

I did learn that George T. Martin was the designer....Now that was me being totally sarcastic.

    Keep posting your new videos.

A Morgan dollar "Expert"? Hardly, just scratches the surface. But as a brief (very brief) introduction it does well enough. But everything you need to know? An extreme exaggeration.

  12. Really appreciate the comments. I have to say, though, that viewers recognize that the words "everything," "expert," etc. were not intended to be taken literally. I don't think most viewers leave the video thinking, "There's more to learn about Morgan dollars? I've been deceived!"

  13. I understand the logic in what you're saying, but I don't think it reflects how people really think. I do not believe that people come out of watching that video thinking that they are truly experts. The title was simply intended to be catchy. The idea is to bring more people into the hobby and teach them a bit about different coins.

  14. I love this idea! Do you have any recommendations for trustworthy sources?

Like I said earlier, I love the effort, but just be careful how you phrase things. Do you own any books on Morgans? I suspect yes, but if not, you definitely need to get some.

I like it and will take any video that isn't someone sitting around opening rolls of "unsearched" coins no that are almost all silver.

You would think that, but it's surprising the number of people who come to the various forums after viewing YouTube videos that seem to think that they know everything, and then argue with experts who try to give them advice or explanations. They really do seem to take what they see on the videos as absolute gospel. So if you tell them this is everything they need to know, they think that's everything they need to know.

  18. I totally hear all of your comments and have taken many of them into account when I made the next installment in the series. Here it is, so let me know what you all think. Keep giving me your feedback and I'll keep improving! That being said, I still used a "bad word" in the title. I can't help it, but I just don't agree that there is a meaningful number of beginners that watch the video and truly think they are experts because the title uses the word "everything."

Perhaps you should spend more time here dealing with the fallout folks like you are so eager to create. Once you do this and show that benefiting this hobby is really what drives you, it will be much easier to take you seriously.

Now I've no doubt you're doing this not to help others, but in the hopes of gaining attention, views, and/or subscribers. You don't want to give up your precious catch line not because as claimed above, but simply because you hope it will draw attention to your videos.

Again, once you start coming here to deal with the mess you're clearly happy to help create, and to personally help the misguided or already mislead newbies, the fact you're posting such videos here should be viewed as nothing but advertising spam.

  21. Man, you are one angry, angry person. What did I do here that deserves the least charitable reading of my post? Do you realize that my channel has over 2 million views? Do you seriously think I posted this here to "spam" and advertise so I can get another measly 35 views? Seriously? I care a lot about numismatics and that's why I make these videos. I make nearly nothing from the youtube advertising and these videos take me days to create--I do it because I enjoy it. In any case, I'll respond to a few of your points:

    1. Obviously the catchy tag line is to get more views. So what? Really, what's wrong with me trying to get people to watch the video? You say it's misleading, the information is correct and valuable. It's not a scam, it's hyperbole. Do you get this combative too when you see "Seattle's Best Coffee" because they're "misleading" people into thinking it's truly the best coffee?
    2. Sorry to break it to you, but coin collecting is a dying hobby. I have 2 million views that say I'm helping solve the problem by perpetuating and growing the hobby. I have thousands of YN followers who enjoy my videos and are encouraged to collect and learn about coins. What have you done to grow the hobby other than naysay and call my integrity into question?
    3. I have been a part of this forum for years and one of the greatest things about the community is that people are generally very inviting to "newbies" to help them learn about the hobby. Your elitist attitude toward coin collecting is shameful. The fact that you see newbies who are confused from what they've read or seen on the internet as "fallout" and "mess" that you deign to clean up is simply just a poor attitude. You should be thrilled that new people are joining the forum to learn about coins.

I want to point out that I generally do not get into arguments on social media but this is a small, tight-knit community and having you call my integrity into question especially when I am trying to give back to the community and encourage the growth of the hobby is not something I will take lying down.
