From there I sit it almost looks like a drop of solder. Your opinion..

Get a toothpick and a razor blade and put a fine point on one end. See if you can gently push the silver thing off in the direction of the rim. OR break a toothpick in half to get a sharp splinter on one piece and do the same. Looks like it will come off easily. Let us know.
Also the coin has green scum all over it and needs conservation.

Solder melts at a much lower temp than copper so if you have a solder gun then just touch the drop and see if it melts. if it does then try to blow it off the coin with a blow gun or use the toothpick like insider mentioned to push the solder off the coin while it is in a melted state. Only problem may be a bright spot under where the drop of solder is originally.

If it is solder you will just melt it all over! Leave it as is and either trade out of it or use it to improve your conservation skills. Coin not very valuable to an advanced collector.

guy -it's not a freakin 1909-S, it's a worn out 1908 worth about a dollar. Why not try some new ways to see if they actually can work? Plus seeing there is no flux on the rest of the copper coin the solder should just run right off of it like water. But I don't want to give you a heart attack so I won't go on any farther!!

I would use my solder iron on it too :)

GOOD! How about this NEW way...try an ice pick! The point is this. It does not matter that the coin is virtually worthless. The same advice I gave holds true no matter what it is worth.

Conservators are like doctors...DO NO HARM. This is a perfect learning coin. Even the ice pick method would not hurt it much :p but I'll bet a sharp thorn/toothpick is all it needs based on my experience as a coin doctor/conservator whatever you want to call it.

Everything on that coin points to a tiny piece of foreign material laying on the surface. No one I know except perhaps guys like Stockton (who are experienced in the art of coin repair/restoration) play with solder irons around ANY coin. Your method (combined w/a toothpick) at best will spread solder all over the place and make the poor coin worse than it is. That coin could be made into a completely presentable VG-10 in the proper hands.

I think a dime struck on a nail planchet would work better then a ice pick or all. :phttp://data:image/jpeg;base64,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 [IMG]

When I buy an IHC collection with common damaged coins like that in them, I spend them - helps promote the hobby.

I've been taught :shame: and you should know , that most of a coin's grade comes from its obverse. Bet the reverse is green also, in need of conservation, and F-12! IHC usually have nice reverses, but you knew that too.

Inquiring minds want to know...WHERE ARE YOU? I'm leaving for a coin show tomorrow and your coin + the success of the "operation" will be on my mind.

Funny, that's exactly what I'd do with it. An iron to heat it and a solder sucker to scarf it up. And you're not helping your rep any by calling people stupid and ignorant, especially when the advice you're mocking is sound. It's a heavily-circulated 1906 IHC, fer cryin' out loud.
