I picked up this 1888 Morgan today. It is not a real high grade but it is a year i needed. I believe I got a a good deal on it. Please take a look and let me know what you think?

    What would you grade it?

XF40 probably, but it appears to have been harshly cleaned.

    I'm guessing 35-40. And cleaned.

It looks XF 40 - 45, but the picture is a bit blurred. I would also suspect that it may have been cleaned.

I'm thinking of picking up a cleaned morgan dollar in about XF condition to run an experiment in "uncleaning" a coin. I plan to just carry it with me in my pocket with some change, car keys, etc. until it wears down to about VF. After all, this is how coins get to VF condition "naturally" in the first place, and they are designed for this treatment. The removal of a tiny amount of the surface through normal wear should also remove traces of having been cleaned. I figure it might take about 6 months.

It looks like a real coin.
