New to Coin Talk as a member but long time reader, I’ve enjoyed the efforts and expertise of the members postings considering coin grading. I would like to offer a Morgan for your scrutiny. The first image shows the coin in its original holder. Looks to me like it has been in the 2x2 for quite some time. Please offer your opinion on condition and grade, thank you!
With a price /value of $6.50, it has been in the that holder for a quite a while. It is a nice looking coin. looks to have some mint luster. Where did you acquire it?
Nice coin, but it won’t grade 65. There’s a dark spot on the obverse, which seems to be terminal toning. Somehow the reverse looks too shiny, as in cleaned /polished shiny.
I also now see a big rim ding on the reverse. But as for the shiny look, I don't see what you are seeing. The photos could be better.
This is a shot of the side at the tone mark, does that help? I agree about the reverse, seems shiny to me too only I can’t figure how (if) it has. I’ve spent a lot of time with a 5x and see no evidence of rubbing or polishing. Full cartwheel and micro-knicks on highest points which I thought would rule out polishing. Thanks again for your response!
Better photos would be needed. As @micbraun said there is a shiny look to the coin. Lay it flat and try to get better images. Some coins have been "Whizzed" and with out detailed photos yours looks like it could be a candidate. Proof like coins will have a cameo appearance, so I personally have ruled that out. Also have you weighed the coin and checked the diameter? 26.73g and a diameter of 38.11 MM
Any photo tips? I’m using an iPhone. Weight and size checks out. What might I expect to see under my 5x if whizzed?
There are many previous threads on the topic. I searched Whizzed and this is what came up. https://www.cointalk.com/search/4064547/?q=Whizzed&o=date&c[title_only]=1&c[node]=30
Dings are always significant and lower grading points, but on the edge is better that in the field or focal points.
Any more helpful? This coin looks frosty from one angle and shiny from another. It will appear bright and brilliant in incandescent lighting. In natural light, depending on the angle, it can appear darker and shiny or like the photos which were taken in natural lighting-at a favorable angle Would whizzing ruin the cartwheel effect?
