I was hoping to collect at least one coin from every country in the 20th century. I'm at about 230 countries. The issue is that alot or countries only have proof, tokens, or medals only. I know it's my collection but do you think I should make it a circulating coin only collection? Should I still try for my every country collection? P.S. I love this site, everyone here seems great!
:welcome:Welcome to Cointalk both of you ! Regarding m60gpmg collection, my 2 cents idea would be to get 2 mirror collection: a) a collection of circulated coins for each country b) a mirror collection of proof from the same one ( provided you have the budget for ) Have a nice time colllecting ! Cheers Philippe
Thanks everyone for your opinions. I think I'll finish the circulated set and take my time on the rest. Some of the commemorative, tokens, and medals are a little expensive.
It certainly sounds like a very interesting country-type collection to build. Will you also include countries that continue to exist and those that no longer exist? You may also wish to include countries that allowed sub-national units to issue coins like Germany did at one time.
My collection includes all countries that existed between 1900- 1999. My collection also includes the German Empire, Third Reich, German States ect. But not the each individual state. That would be to much at this time, maybe some day. My other collections are taking up much of my $. Walking Halves and Merc Dimes are expensive.
Your on a good path. To go light on your wallet, stay with circulating coins for those countries that issue them and non-circulating issues for those that don't issue circulating coinage. When I began collecting coins I only collected type sets of each country, recently I've began collecting everything minus NCI's. They're too expensive and in my opinion are made to simply profit from collectors and usually made by private mints like Franklin or National Collectors Mint. I'm up to 100 1" binders with 10 pages each and mostly all filled. Approx. number of coins 24,500 +/- I do not hold a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records for collecting. Nor would I even come close, but...I do hold the record for most Guinness beers drunk in one sitting at my local pub.
Its your collection OP, you make it what you want. If you wish to collect all circulation coinage countries versus all countries for the 20th century, no one here will tell you are "wrong". Btw, a guinness record, lucky man. I am usually only good for about 2 pints and I am done, but if I ever drink a beer, it has to be a guinness.
I hate musicals! But I do see how this video relates in every way to what we were discussing on this thread. Amazing!
I have faced the same collection and dilemma(s). My ultimate choice was to limit the collection to circulating coinage but I still had to slip a few Non Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) into the collection simply because I wanted to do it. Here are a few from my 20th Century type set. I was looking for a photo of a Biafra coin but couldn't find one.
The coins depicted in the above post are from: Somalia Germany Weimar Republic Ajman (Ujman) Greece Brazil
I like to find 18th 19th +20th World coins. I got a go start while I spent 20yr+15days in the US Army 1968-1989. Here my newest find.
Thanks for posting some pictures. I can't pick a favorite but I like the Italy 5 Lire & the 1936 Maundy set.
I would say one of each circulating coin (preferably in unc) but I'd add the NCLT and token coinage where prices are reasonable or if I already had one. As you say though, it's your call.
