What are the oldest proof coin(s) you own? Feel free to post pictures if you want. The only considerable old proof that I have is an NGC certified 1872 PF-64 Cameo Shield Nickel, which I recently picked up for my new shield nickel collection. It's quite a coin really. To see such an old example in proof cameo condition is just amazing. I'd love to read about and/or see pictures of your old proofs! Go ahead and post more than one old proof if you want! :kewl:
i think the 3cent silver piece is a proof, dont have it the coin in hand or a picture of the label it's in the safety deposit box.
I've posted this one before... an 1859 French Liberty pattern half dollar (Longacre). J-242. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Click to expand.
One of the reasons I'm so impressed with ldhair's Barber 50c is I know how difficult it is to get good ones. Sure, there's plenty of Barber proofs around... but they're not as nice as one would think. I would love to see ldhair's !!! I hesitate to ask what it graded; it looks so pinpoint perfect it's gotta be 65 or better.
Wow, you guys are something else. The oldest proof I have is a 1954 proof set handed down to me by my Dad......
Some really beautiful coins..I think my favorite might be the J242 pattern Half, another Longacre design. My oldest proof is a 1866 two center, just received it a week or so ago, here is the link that has the pic http://www.cointalk.com/t70859/
I wish it was a 65 but it's only a 63. Images of proofs are tough to grade. This one is a 64 and my best try at an image. Mark Feld helped me with both of them and let me use the image of the 1903.
Proof Like Both Beautiful in grade and Toning !!! I find it difficult to capture the deep mirrors on most proofs with digital camera's.I have a DMPL Trade Dollar that camera doesn't due justice too the depth of the mirrors.
Here's one thing I do with silvery, water-white fields (such as modern ASEs) - I take a sheet of black construction paper, cut a round hole the diameter of the lens, and stick the lens through it. That way the mirror fields are reflecting black construction paper. Here are the results...
That is a really good picture, 900fine. I've come close with proper lighting and angles and playing around with it a bit, but there always seems to be just that little bit of reflection left. What I find I get more often is infinite reflections between the slab and the coin - I see about 10 images of the coin. Sorta like a really killer double die. Any tips on eliminating this?
