Given the popularity of the collector sector for commemorative coins and the pricing going ever higher even on modern issues, I thought it would be interesing to post this thread. For me the 1935 Old Spainish Trail, Texas 1938 Set, and the Oregon Trail Memorial are tops on my list of must haves. My only gold commem is the 1995W Civil War Battlefield 5$ Gold..it is a beautiful coin and a nice piece of ART. What are some of yours?
Without thinking about it too much, I would have to say that the 1934 Texas Centennial Commemorative half would be my favorite. The reverse has too be one of the most beautiful of any coin struck by the U.S. Mint.
I like the Boon Comm but maybe that is because I have been to the Fort where Boon was for awhile... But other than that...the Stone Mt and the Lexington-Concord and there are more but I'd better stop....the problem is...most of the ones I like are high $$$ in the better grades! Speedy
so far, texas for me as well! I am actually puting together a set of classic commems, I have a texas that makes your eyes hurt it is so lustrous! ( awsome strike as well ) The pilgrim half also has a quite dignity...
Good memory Speedy! In the chaos of school ending (today is the last day) and getting ready to leave for vacation I haven't been around much or had time to fiddle more with my pics...this is the best I can do. The pic doesn't do justice to the luster, I'm still learning. Tradernick was able to see the coin in hand and can vouch for the 'WOW' factor on this one
#1. Oregon Trail #2. San Diego #3. Pilgrim Incredible coins. There are many other wonderful commems (I do like the Texas), but the three above were the first that I collected, and still my favorite.
LOL My great aunt once said, "Don't worry when you can't remember where your car keys are. Worry when you have them but can't remember what they are for."
Thanks guys...your making me feel better I'll forget to do something small but when it comes to work I some how remember that...I never have gotten out of it yet....!!--I guess work is ok when it help pays for coins!!! Here is a older Comm I got a few weeks ago...I know its not much to look at...(I buy the older ones when I find them at my price range) but the toning on the back got me...I guess the guy had a small card in the filp with the coin with the price on it...then my dealer got it and took out the flip and here is what it looks like. Speedy
Hey Thanks everyone for replying..I find it very interesting thus far on the coins that have been talked about and the pic of the Texas is truly a fantastic coin..I am jealous over that one for sure..keep em coming and good hunting to everyone...
What about the modern commemoratives? Do they have any long term potential to increase in value like the older ones? Some of the $5 gold coins sell at prices not far above the bullion value and are well struck, but maybe there are too many, or comems are just not popular enough for them to do well.
Here are three of my fav. commems: Sorry for the blurry pictures, the san diego is REALLY nice with just a little bit of a weak strike on the breast plate ( a problem with most coins of this type ) the texas is my best, really nice strike, no blemishes, etc. The pilgrim is actually a very white coin, but i must have cought it at a bad angle! it looks so grey!!! I had other pics showing off its brightness, but they turned out way to grainy.... My good camera ( nikon d100 ) has no memory card at the moment ( left it at work ) so i had to use the "daily driver" and it is not very god at close ups... I love commems! unfortunatly/fortunatly many others do as well, so they are geting harder and harder to get... any one here have a whole set? mostly complete set?
